Richard H. Prentice Obituary
Prentice, Richard H.

Richard H. Prentice, 75 of Vestal passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 27, 2012. He was predeceased by his parents; Roy L. and Jessie I. Prentice, brother, Jon R. Prentice, step-brother, Paul N. Prentice and nephew, Matthew Prentice. He is survived by his sister, Sharon V. (Richard) Billings, brother, Robert E. Prentice. He is also survived by his loving companion, Alzina Johnson, several nieces, nephews, cousins, one Aunt, Margaret Gill and one Uncle, Howard (Helen) Kintner. Richard was a member of the IBM Quarter Century Club. He started in 1954 in the Apprentice Tool Making Program and retired after 36 years as a Project Manager. He attended Broome Community College, and was active in IBM Sports Programs. Richard was an avid snow skier and a "regular" at Greek Peak since the facility first opened over 50 years ago. In the early 1970's, he became interested in the challenge of downhill ski racing at which he excelled throughout the rest of his life. For over 35 years, he competed every year in the New York State Masters Series, as well as the Masters Eastern (New England) Sise Cup Series, winning numerous State, Regional, and National titles. He was a consistent competitor and perennial winner. In addition to his performance on skiis, he was a dedicated organizer of Greek Peak and regional Masters Ski races annually, as well as a supporter of Junior Ski Racing. Known to his skiing friends as "Rockett" he was also one of the original organizers, and in recent years the mainstay, of the unofficial "Fuggowi" (a.k.a. Rat Pack) ski group of friends who skied together for many years at Greek Peak. He was a very generous and loyal friend and will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him well. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, October 1, 2012 at 11 AM at the Nichols Funeral Home, 7323 119th St. Whitney Point, NY. The family will receive friends at Nichols Funeral Home Sunday, September 30, 2012 from 2-6 PM. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers, those wishing to make memorial donations please consider a contribution to the "Prentice Family Scholarship" at the Whitney Point High School, 10 Keibel Road, P.O. Box 249, Whitney Point, New York 13862.
