May13, 1915-January 6, 2013: George Novak 97, of Syria, VA and formerly of Binghamton, NY died on January 6, 2013. He and his current wife, Margaret, retired to Madison County, VA in 1977. George was born on May 14, 1915 in Shamokin, PA. He was the son of Frank Novak and Margaret Kish Novak Kochis and was one of 9 children. He was pre-deceased by his sisters, Margaret Snow and Anne Torto and brothers, Frank Novak and John Novak. A veteran of the United States Navy Seabees, he served in the 6th Special Battalion during WWII (1942-1945) and was stationed in the Pacific Islands.
George earned a B.S. in Physical Ed. from Cortland State Teachers College in NY in 1949 and an M.S. in Guidance Counseling from Syracuse University in NY in 1950. He did additional graduate work at Seton Hall University in NY and Montclair State University in NJ. He was Physical Director, Camp Director, and Guidance Director at Syracuse Boys Club. Also a Guidance Counselor and Drivers Ed. Teacher at Nutley Senior H.S. in Nutley, NJ. George finally retired from North Junior H.S. in Bloomfield, NJ where he was a Guidance Counselor and Health Teacher. George was a member of the Madison Lions' Club and Madison Emergency Services Association. Survived by his wife, Margaret; daughter, Bernadette (Eldersburg, MD); son, George Patrick (Ponte Vedra Beach, FL); brothers, Joseph Novak and Bernard Kochis; and sisters, Mary Newman and Matilda Smey. George was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
