John Joseph Monigan, 80, of Vestal, NY, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on July 2nd after a very brief illness. He is predeceased by his parents, John and Mary Monigan, in-laws Samuel and Lottie Cuchiara, a sister, Mary Lou (Jack) Cronin and his beloved son David Monigan. He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Sonia Cuchiara Monigan; his children Brendan Monigan, Mary Monigan, and John J. Monigan III; his stepchildren Lisa Moore (Gary) Stevens, Tina Moore (Matthew) Siock, and Christine Teeple (Joseph) Miller; grandchildren Gillian, Kimeee, Courtney, Brianna, Taylor, Sam, Madison, Carly, Paige, Nicholas, and Bennett John. John is also survived by a sister, Kathleen McBride, sisters-in-law Carol Kane and Marlene (Jim) Walsh; and a brother-in-law, David Cuchiara. He was also survived by many nieces and nephews. John also leaves behind two special friends and golfing buddies Dick Schlauder and Duane Jones. John attended St. Paul's School and also served as an altar boy at the Church. Joining the Air Force in 1950, he served his country during the Korean War and went on to earn a bachelor's in accounting from St. Bonaventure University. He then began a 35-year career with IBM Endicott, from which he retired in 1992. At age 52, he earned an MBA from Marywood University. In addition he worked for H&R block as a tax specialist for many years in Naples,FL. Known as "THE DUKE," he was the PRIDE OF THE EASTSIDE, who is remembered for his lifelong passion for basketball. He played for St. Paul's, the Air Force, and St. Bonaventure University. Jack and Sonia loved spending time with their wonderful family, including 11 grandchildren, and a large circle of friends. Recently for Jack's 80th birthday they took a trip to Ireland. He will be greatly missed. He was the best! He was the Duke! In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Bonaventure University's men's basketball team in Olean, NY, and the basketball program at Seton Catholic in John's memory. Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday at the THOMAS J. SHEA FUNERAL HOME INC. 137 Robinson Street, Binghamton. A Funeral Mass will be held at STS. John and Andrew Church on Saturday at 9:30am. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
