Charles was a friend, colleague. I gave him his first one man show in my modest Chelsea, NYC gallery. I believed in him, his artwork, vision of justice. May he Rest In peace. He made his mark in this world. My condolences to his Mother and Sister.

I learned the devastating news on Sunday. It has taken me till now to even be able to write a sentence about what I should have had another 50 years to prepare for.

I met Charles on a beach in Montego Bay in 1987. We had a fun filled week in the sun including a night of dancing at Reggae Sunsplash. We maintained a relationship post beach that introduced me to Baltimore, New York, the art world, his friends and sushi. Distance took its toll but Facebook bridged the gap. Over the years we would chat periodically. I found out he had recently taken a bike trip that took him near Toronto, where I live. After a bit of fun email banter back and forth, Charles took a 7-hour drive, despite his back pain, and showed up on my doorstep in December. It had been 25 years since we had last seen each.

It was if time had stood still. Over 3 days we reminisced, and got caught up with each other's lives. He talked about his family (especially mum, grandma, Carmen, Joshua and Lemont). He caught me up on old friends and new ones. He was so proud of his new Associate Art Professor role and of all his past and present students. I am eternally grateful for the time we had together.

I knew about the Cancer but did not know how little time he had left. Charles was a survivor, a fighter, it just seemed like this too would just be a small bump in the road of life. He accomplished more than most in his short life. He lived life. I am truly honored to call him a friend.

Charles, I miss you and you will forever be in my heart.

My sincere condolences to the family.

Love
Corinne

Oh Charles What sweet memories! As one of Charles's teachers at Keystone College I must say that you were one of those special students that exuded all the personality trades and talent that any teacher could hope for. You were an example of what it meant to work at perfecting and pushing results beyond all levels of exaptation. After graduation you remained a friend and fellow artist. We met infrequently and when we did it was like the time was incremental. You will live in our memory and, I am sure, in the memory of all that knew you. The thoughts of you bring a smile. God speed Charles and we are happy that you had some of your last years on the open road. Thanks for your travel post! With all our Love Bill & DeDe.

I first met Charles McGill in 2008, we were in the Westchester Biennial exhibition together. His work always stunned me as powerful, honest and tough as nails.

While he was teaching at WCC, we would always comment on each other's students works that we posted on FB. He was a great instructor who cared about his students and inspired the best out of them.

He was one of the guest jurors this year along with Tracy Miller for the Alexander Rutsch Memorial Award at the Pelham Art Center. Even though he was in great pain from his illness, he wanted to attend and be part of the panel. Unfortunately he was too ill to attend the exhibition.

I am so saddened to find out he has passed. I will always remember him for being a kind and caring man and teacher, and a passionate artist.

Charles was not only a gifted and prolific artist, but also a dedicated teacher with deep and sincere interest in his students and their journey of growing and learning as artists. He will be greatly missed by the many students who learned from his lessons and his example. His colleagues all know they have lost a great peer. His fellow artists know that a shining source of creative energy has been dimmed. Deepest condolences to his family or their loss.

Charles,

We shared an outfield when we were in high school, playing for Post 80. You were a good center fielder, covering way more ground than I could have...but I still contend that I had the edge in the batter's box, my good man.

I first met you through Michael T. You were both displayed talent in your drawings as young fellows. And you were funny, intense, and well....just one of those people you can never forget. What a trip it would be to gaze upon a piece of your art some day, and remember you.

My condolences to your Mom and sister Carmen. I remember how warm their smiles were, as they were when we met a few times. And I remember thinking, "How can such two lovely ladies be related to such a smart-#%* ?

Peace, Charles. Gibby

I went to school in the formative years with Charles from 1982-1984 at Keystone, then Jr. College. Our cohort then all new that Charles had a special talent as an illustrator and that he had a special voice in our world that he was able to convey through his images. I am so saddened that such a bright and talented being has left our world, but know he has been called to greatness elsewhere. May God bless his family that I never knew and know he touched the lives of many that you may never have known...

Charles, you were always well liked by everyone who knew you. My fondest memories of you will always be the humorous stories my sister Shirley (R.I.P) would tell about you two at Ben Franklin Elem. But more importantly, you were always friendly and supportive to everyone around you. You will be deeply missed. R.I.P Brother
