Mildred CHELI Obituary

CHELI, Mildred A. September 29, 1914 - October 14, 2015 Born in Hood River, OR to John and Theresa Issel. Her family moved to CA and lived in several locations, one being Tomales, where she graduated from high school. She met her husband, Harold at a local dance. They eventually bought a house in 1938 at the corner of Stony Point and Todd Road and turned it into a grocery store, which they ran for ten years. There, she raised her three boys, Bert, Bob and Tom. She then became a cook for the Bellevue Union School District and later, head cook at Kawana School for 30 years. After retiring, she worked part-time at Hardisty's Homeware Store. Mildred is survived by her three sons, Bert (Dianne), Bob (Bobbie) and Tom (Dina); grandchildren, Tammy Bishop, Tracy Nash and Dan Cheli, Julie Bohny and Jill Vos, Michele Hessler, Shannon Urquhart and Heather Berlied; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. A very special Thank You to Gloria and her staff at Glorious Place and Heartland Hospice. In lieu of flowers, if desired, donations can be made to a favorite charity. There will be a celebration of Mildred's life announced at a later date.

Dear Mrs. Cheli,
You will never be forgotten by me! Happy Heavenly Birthday! I loved your homemade lunches cooked in the cafeteria at Kawana School. I was so lucky to be invited to your home for dinner and spend time with you and Mr. Cheli. You both were the grandparents that I never had. One day I'll see you again!

One of the mysteries of our nature that we unprepared when receiving thunder-stroke news like this, find ourselves arriving and arriving and arriving at that place and time of Mildred's uncommon goodness and generosity of spirit when something came to life within us because of her. What we have once then discovered we can never lose, for all that we love deeply has become a part of us perhaps that's Mildred's unintended approach to immortality.

We loved Millie's presence at the Senior Dances at Finley Community Center. Her baking skills were legendary! Once a month she lead a team of bakers to create several kinds of cookies to be served during the intermission at the dances. A total sweetheart of a woman.

Cheli Family: I am saddened to hear of Mrs. Cheli's passing. I had the pleasure of meeting her at Kawana School, when I was 11 years old. Mrs. Cheli prepared the meals in the cafeteria, and her cooking was wonderful! I started volunteering in the cafeteria, cleaning up after lunch, so I could have seconds of her cooking! Mr. and Mrs. Cheli were always so kind, I was invited to dinner once or twice a month, and entertained by their games and storytelling

I have such wonderful memories of "Mrs. Cheli" growing up on Todd Road, both as a family friend and when she was a cook at Bellevue. I remember her helping me put together my bridal registry at Hardisty's when I got married, and I always enjoyed seeing her at the dinner dances we both attended in recent years. Just the other day I saw someone who reminded me so much of her, and I thought of her with fondness not knowing she had passed away. I will miss her smiling face and warm greetings. My sincere and heartfelt sympathy to all her family and friends.
