Dale's family moved to Santa Rosa in 1935 where his parents, Bill and Bertie Diekmann, ran the Safeway and later owned the 405 Market on Mendocino Ave. A Santa Rosa High School graduate, Dale joined the Coast Guard and spent the war years patrolling beaches in the Northwest before becoming a gunner on a ship which provided fuel to airbases in the South Pacific. Dale married Barbara Starr of Potter Valley. Together they raised four children: Barbara, Bill, Diane and Christine. He also helped raise three of his cousins: Bill, Mark and Kristin Diekmann of Tomales. Besides working at Safeway and the 405 Market, Dale built cabinets and houses in the Santa Rosa area, and delivered Shell gas to ranches around Sonoma County. For a while Dale also was a co-owner of Miller's Market with his cousins and uncle in Marin County. Dale was a patient man with an easy-going personality. He loved tinkering in his garage, hunting and fishing. Most important to him were family and friends; time spend with them was treasured. He will be remembered for his good-natured jokes and teasing and willingness to always lend a hand. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Barbara, and his children: Barbara A. Diekmann of Santa Rosa; William Diekmann (Sue) of Spring Garden, CA; Diane Orr (Jim) of Monterey, CA; and Christine Prindle (Chuck) of Windsor, CA. He also leaves behind his grandchildren: Michael Orr, Deanna Orr, Julie Diekmann Hinojos, Melanie Diekmann, Robert Lawson, James 'Ryan' Orr, Bill Diekmann, Jason Prindle, Dylan Prindle and his great-grandson, Jayden Prindle. He is also survived by Kristin Lawson (Scott) of Tomales, CA and other Diekmann cousins. Preceding him in death were his brother, Bill H. Diekmann, and his cousins Bill W. Diekmann and Mark Diekmann. His family would like to thank all of his wonderful caregivers at The Oaks in Petaluma, and Park View Gardens in Santa Rosa. Honoring his request, there will be no funeral services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to Heartland Hospice, 2455 Bennett Valley Road Ste. B-214, Santa Rosa, CA 95404.
