Arno J. BERRUTO

December 2, 2013. He was born February 18, 1921 in Richmond, California. He graduated from Richmond High in 1939 and later attended San Francisco State University, lettering in track and field. However, with the outbreak of World War II, Arno answered the need of his country and began work in the naval shipyards in San Francisco. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was sent to New York where he met the love of his life, Mary C. Coniglio, whom he married on October 5, 1946. They moved to Richmond, California where Arno began working and also resumed his education at San Francisco State University. He graduated with a degree in History and later a Master's degree in Education. They moved to Santa Rosa in the early 1950s where they raised their family. They attended St. Rose Catholic Church and later St. Eugene's Cathedral where Arno was active in many organizations including the Knights of Columbus and the Cub Scouts, as a Scout Leader. Arno taught several subjects at Herbert Slater Junior High School for 27 years, including Math and Spanish, and was fluent in three languages. He was faculty advisor Stamp Club and was a member of the Philatelic Society. His students remembered his strong yet subdued presence and his patience, while his colleagues recalled that he was always an exemplary professional and a gentleman. Arno won the coveted "Miss Peach" award for excellence in the classroom in the late 1950s. He loved the outdoors, the redwoods and was an avid gardener. He leaves a legacy of hard work and traditional values with loyalty to his family and country. He is survived by his three children; Susan Sandholm, Greg Berruto and James Berruto, all residing in Sonoma County; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren; his cousins Margie Sanchez of Santa Rosa and Fiorella Castango of Italy. A Catholic service will be held at Daniels Chapel of the Roses, 1225 Sonoma Ave. Santa Rosa, on Friday, December 20, 2013 at 11:00 a.m., immediately followed by a reception in the Rose Room.
