Barbara Jean SMITH

Born to Leo and Ellafair Shymanik, a coal mining family, in West Frankfort, Illinois, Barbara attended the schools and grew to womanhood there. She committed her life to Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at a young age. She met her husband, the late Pastor Ted C. Smith, while the two were students at Cincinnati Christian University. Ted was a ministerial student in the seminary there. The two graduated in the spring of 1953 and were married shortly thereafter. During all of Ted's pastorates, Barbara held several secretarial positions, first as secretary to the University president, then for the school district office in Corona, CA. Then, two years after the family's move to Santa Rosa in 1970, Barbara became executive secretary to the Santa Rosa Superintendent of Schools, a position she held until her retirement in 1988. While very competent as a secretary, Barbara's true vocational passion was music. She was an accomplished pianist, organist, and choral director, organizing choirs and ensembles, and accompanying the worship services in each of Ted's three pastorates, and for nearly 19 years following Ted's retirement in 1995, first at Mt. Orab, OH, then at Corona, and lastly, for the past 43 years, at Santa Rosa First Christian Church (now Westview Christian Church.) For several years, she was also pianist for the Village Singers, a community choral group. Barbara was preceded in death by her brother, George Shymanik, her parents, and on Christmas day, 2006, by her husband, Ted. She is survived by two children, Charles (Barbara), of Yuma, Arizona; and Joni Wilson of Santa Rosa; grandsons Christopher Smith, Bobby Smith, Robert Wilson, Theodore Wilson; granddaughter Jennifer Miller, three great-grandchildren, her church family and many, many friends. Friends are invited to a visitation on Friday, December 13, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Daniels Chapel of the Roses, 1225 Sonoma Ave. Santa Rosa, Ca.
