Our hearts are breaking in losing our dear Son, Husband, Brother, Uncle, Godfather. Doug passed away on June 20, 2013 at home surrounded by his family, losing his courageous battle with cancer. Doug was born in San Diego, CA on December 2, 1949 to Bob and Elvira Grundman. The family moved to Sonoma in 1960. Doug served in the Navy from 1969 to 1972; serving on the ship Delta ARP in Vietnam. Then Adak Alaska and Skaggs Island. He was very proud to be able to serve his country. He returned and earned a degree in Associate in Science from Santa Rosa Junior College. Doug and Lynn met on a blind date set up by a good friend. They would be married on August 2, 1980, spending the next 33 years growing, laughing, crying, learning and loving. Their favorite place was Bodega Bay. They would go as often as they could, just to sit and listen to the waves, it was peaceful and the stress of everyday life would just melt away. Doug loved gardening and he and his Mom would plant a garden every year at her home. It would be the best in whatever they chose to grow. Doug enjoyed sharing with everyone anything that he and his Mom grew. Doug enjoyed visiting his sister Barbara and extended family in Minnesota. Doug proudly became a Police Officer
and then a Special Investigator for Napa State Hospital. He found his job rewarding, serving with honor. He would often say he could or would not have been the person he was without his fellow officers and investigators, they are family. Doug was a very proud Godfather of Amber Van Winkle, Crystal Bowdoin, Mark Bowdoin, Christine Hitchcock and Sara Vanlandinham. He would always say "I feel so proud and honored to be the Godfather of these children, whom I have seen grow into wonderful people. My joy has been and always will be that I was able to be part of their lives, and I cherish them so much". Doug just loved life and always found joy in everything he did. If it was a simple walk, a good book, an old movie or just spending quality time with family and friends.
