Jack BALSHAW

Passed peacefully on Wednesday, May 8th, 2013 at the age of 78. Husband of Janet Otis Balshaw, and father to David and Jim. He passed after a two year battle with cancer brought on by the delayed detection of a melanoma. After serving in the army he always felt fortunate to have had the GI Bill which allowed him to be the first of his family to attend college. Upon graduating as a civil engineer he joined the Federal Highway Department during the early days of constructing the national interstate highway system, and spent his career there. Jack is best known locally for his years on the Petaluma City Council and Planning Commission, and as a long time columnist for the Argus Courier. Among his many accomplishments for Petaluma we can count our growth control planning, and the beginnings of the Downtown Association and Petaluma Ecumenical Projects. The pedestrian river bridge is named in his honor. In his personal life he loved to laugh, and took great joy in home and family, and hiking, reading, and flying his plane. The family will have a small private memorial in June. In lieu of flowers the family prefers contributions be made to Hospice of Petaluma or the Yosemite Conservancy. Arrangements by ADOBE CREEK FUNERAL HOME, 331 Lakeville St., Petaluma, CA 94952.
