Laura Ruby (Barrett) HENRY

Laura Ruby (Barrett) Henry left this world on December 16, 2012 at the accomplished age of 97. She was living in the Vinecrest Senior Apartments, in Windsor, California at the time of her death. Laura was born in Ferndale, Washington in 1915 in the same log house in which her father was born. She graduated from Union High School (Sedro-Woolley, Washington) in 1934 and was immediately hired by the High School as an office worker. She was very proud of the high scores she earned on the high school graduation examination and she believed that her good fortune in obtaining a secure depression era job was due too her academic performance while in high school. She married William (Dude) Henry in 1935. Dude was the love of her life and they loved each other completely. In 1948 they moved to Humboldt County, in Northern California, where the raised their three sons: William (Bill), Robert (Bob) and Thomas (Tom). Encouraged by their parents Bill, Bob and Tom graduated from Rio Dell Elementary School, Fortuna Union High School and Humboldt State College. Each of them went on to have distinguished careers in public education in California. While living in Humboldt County Laura completed a 40 year career in accounting/ bookkeeping. She and Dude retired in the mid 1970's and then enjoyed traveling around the country and visiting their children and grandchildren. Laura was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She touched our hearts with her generosity and unconditional love. She was always cheerful and she maintained a positive attitude, even during difficult times. Laura was the storyteller of the family and she left a written journal of her best stories for all her family to cherish. She had a great sense of humor and, following her Irish heritage, she could always make a good story better. She was preceded in death by her husband, who died in 1986, and by her four brothers (Francis, Jim, Fred and Clarence) and her sister Mary. Her husband and three of her brothers served in the U.S Armed Forces during World War II and the fourth served during the Korean War. She is survived by her three sons: Bill (Fortuna, CA), Bob (Windsor, CA), and Tom (Petaluma, CA) and their wives (Fran, Betty and Myrita); by eight grandchildren (Dawn, William III, Angela, Jennifer, Robert, Nolan, Daniel, and Cameron); and by seven great- grandchildren (Claire, Madeline, Thomas, Cianna, Adam, Wolfgang, and Grant). While her family mourns its loss it also rejoices, secure in the knowledge that she now resides in the House of the Lord. As a long term member of Our Lady of Guadalupe parish her faith remained strong through the end of her life on this earth. In lieu of flowers the family requests that any who care to do so make a contribution to the Vinecrest Senior Apartments, Inc - a nonprofit, tax exempt organization. Laura loved her years at Vinecrest and she made many friends there. Mailing address is: Vinecrest Apartments, Inc C/O Burbank Housing 790 Sonoma Ave. Santa Rosa, CA 95404 The burial will be private but next Spring there will be a memorial mass at Our Lady of Guadalupe followed by an Irish wake at Bob and Betty's house in Windsor.
