Evelyn A. Amaral

Passed away in Santa Rosa on Wednesday, September 15, 2010 ~ on her 100th Birthday. She was born September 15, 1910 in Centerville (now Fremont), CA. She was a resident of Spring Lake Village since it opened in 1986. Evelyn was a graduate of San Jose State University where she received her BA Degree in Education, Physical Education, and a minor degree in Health, and Stanford University where she received her MA Degree in education. Upon graduation, she worked as an assistant in the College Laboratory in Anatomy and Physiology. She then taught three years at Los Altos Elementary School before being called back to teach at San Jose State in her fields, and became a Professor of teacher training for the next eight years. In the summers, she taught at Sacramento and San Francisco State Universities. In 1946, after an additional year at Stanford, she worked for the San Francisco Unified School District until 1962. She was also a Laboratory Technician for Best Foods and a consultant with HR Bloch. She was a Life member of the California Scholarship Federation, President of Tau Gamma at San Jose State, member of Black Masque (13 top women of the College Class of 1932), Delta Kappa Gamma, and Pi Lambda Theta at Stanford. She served on the Boards of Sonoma County Retired Teachers, Delta Kappa Gamma and the Santa Rosa Retirement Housing Foundation (original founder of Spring Lake Village) as Treasurer. Evelyn was a dear friend of the late Fritzie Moore. In 1962, she and Fritzie purchased a 52 acre ranch near the Petrified Forest above Calistoga. This was a hobby ranch, not a working ranch, and while there taught her last three years of teaching at Cook Junior High in Santa Rosa. At her request, no services will be held. Inurnment will be at Santa Rosa Memorial Park, Valley View Mausoleum.
