James Crabtree Obituary

July 11, 1934 - October 29, 2010 Loving husband, family man, and all-around good guy, Jim Crabtree, died Friday, October 29, 2010, of heart failure. Jim was born in Oakland, CA and was raised in Berkeley, CA. After graduating from Berkeley High School in 1952, Jim started his career at Standard Oil, where he worked until he was drafted into the army in 1957. After fulfilling his draft obligation in Fort Lewis, WA, Jim married Lois Hauch and started a new career in computer programming at GM in Oakland. In 1963, Jim transferred to the new GM manufacturing plant in Fremont, CA, where he stayed until he married Marilyn and accepted a promotion to the Fairfax, KS plant in 1981. Jim and Marilyn spent the next 16 years in the Kansas City, KS area and made many wonderful friends. After Jim's retirement in 1992, Jim and Marilyn returned to California, where they enjoyed frequent visits with their grandchildren, traveling the world, golfing, and making more dear friendships. After Jim's diagnosis of leukemia in 1999, Jim and Marilyn became active volunteers with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). Jim volunteered as an honoree and participant with the LLS Team in Training fundraising program. In 2001, Jim and Marilyn completed the San Diego Rock 'n Roll Marathon. For their efforts, they raised over $6,000 to help fight blood cancers and related diseases. Jim loved and delighted in his family and friends. He inspired us with his kind words, funny anecdotes, practical nature, and generous spirit. Jim is survived and missed by his wife Marilyn Crabtree; daughter Liana Crabtree (Martin Won), step-daughter Martha Carpenter (Paul Carpenter), step-son George Kirby, step-son Jim Kirby (Toshiko Kaneda); grandchildren and step-grandchildren Jasmine Won, Athena Won, Cassandra Osegueda, Kristen Osegueda, Courtney Osegueda, Koji Kirby and Kenji Kirby; former wife Lois Crabtree; sister-in-law Elaine Winters, brothers-in-law David Britt (Lindy Britt) and Paul Burger; and many loving nieces and nephews. Jim is preceded in death by step-daughter Laurie Osegueda, sister-in-law Kay Burger, and brothers Charles, Clifford, Irvin, and Kenneth. The family thanks everyone at Sutter VNA & Hospice for the support they provided that allowed Jim to live and die on his own terms at home. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 5, 2010, at Daniels Chapel of the Roses in Santa Rosa. To remember Jim, the family encourages everyone to share a kind word with a loved one. The family also encourages donations to Sutter VNA & Hospice (www.suttervna.org) and the Children's Museum of Sonoma County (www.childrensmuseumnb.org). DANIELS CHAPEL OF THE ROSES 525-3730

Thinking of all of you with love today.

November 4, 2010

I was a close childhood friend of Lois Hauch (Crabtree) and met Jim when they started dating and he was working at the Standard Oil station on N. Broadway in Oakland. I was in their wedding and my husband, Ron, and I were good friends during their marriage. We had a lot of many good times together and great memories were made. I am so sorry that Jim has lost his battle with Leukemia but I know his love for his daughter, Liana, will survive for years to come. How wonderful that his granddaughters, Jasmine and Athena, and son-in-law, Martin, will also have many shared memories of Jim. May happy memories comfort Marilyn on her loss of Jim................ "Rocky," as I knew him, was a good friend and the best brother-in-law. He was more like an older brother, always there for me and ever ready with his great sense of humor. I will always treasure the memory of my friendship with him and Marilyn. I will miss him very much.

Nancy and I want to express how much we treasured our friendship with Jim ans Marilyn. Friendships that endure many years are one of life's treasurers. We always enjoyed traveling and visiting with the Jim and Marilyn. I have such great memories of our Danube River cruise together. The Burt's Kahn's and Crabtrees always celebrated our anniversaries in March going out to dinner. JIm's laugh and his wonderful humor will truly be missed. Love Dave and Nancy Kahn

Jim was "Uncle Rocky" to me and "GUR" (Great-Uncle Rocky) to my children. He was my Dad's little brother and my last link to him. He had a wonderful personality and great sense of humor and I loved searching for the perfect "Old Guy" birthday cards for him. Uncle Rocky was smart, classy, kind and fun and I truly admired him. My life was made richer by having him as a part of it! He will be truly missed! Until we meet again.

Jim & I worked together at Fairfax and he was truly a good guy. Jim had a way to put everything into perspective very quickly. He was a person who I respected and valued his opinion. He was great family man, who loved life. He will be missed. Thank you Jim for being Jim.

Jim was my boss at GM Fairfax and through the years we became good friends and golfing buddies. Throughout the 39 years I worked for GM and EDS I would have to say Jim was without a doubt my best boss and a true friend. I valued his opinions, his jokes, and his friendship; he will be missed by all. My prayers go out to Marilyn and Jim's family, may they find peace and comfort.

You will truly be missed. While we always want to have one more day here on earth, I know you had the best seat in the house on Sunday to enjoy the Giants win the World Series. Much Love, Margo
