Billy Tatum Obituary

Known to many as "Coach", Billy R. Tatum passed away Thursday December 2, 2010 at age 83 at his home. He is survived by loving wife, Berta of 62 years; daughters Tanya Tatum, Tammy Pinoris, son-in-law Mike Pinoris; grandchild Makela; nephews Billy 'Deece' Tatum and Danny Hagood, nieces Gail Robinson, Debbie Lucas, Renee Garcia and Sherry Hagood. At age 15, Bill proudly served for four years in the US Navy in World War II. A resident of Ukiah since 1953, he was a teacher, coach and administrator of Ukiah Adult School. For 20 years, he coached football, boxing, wrestling and golf at Ukiah High school. When he wasn't coaching, he refereed sports and in the summers worked as a pear orchard foreman for numerous ranches in Ukiah. A Past Exalted Ruler, and a Past President of the Lions Club and Shriners, he was a dedicated philanthropist and always willing to give a helping hand. A man of many words and adventures; he will be remembered by his jokes, storytelling, love of life and good times. He loved his family, friends, students, his community and his country and will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Friends are invited to a Celebration of Life on Saturday December 11, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Mendocino Lake Clubhouse, 1200 Lake Mendocino Drive, Ukiah. I always enjoyed the relationship I had with Billy when I was VP/Mgr. at the BofA Branch in Ukiah. Had great times at P.J.'s home when we watched the Super Bowls. He will be missed in Ukiah. May he rest in Peace.

I met Billy R. Tatum and several of his family members many years ago through my brother-in-law, Billy Deece Tatum. Billy R. Tatum was so much like his brother Abe Tatum – a perfect gentleman, so kind, so nice and such a family man. Both brothers were World War II veterans and served our country well for which we are very grateful.

May the God Lord Rest Billy R. Tatum in Eternal Peace in that Beautiful Place in Heaven.

My family and I join together in expressing our Deepest Sympathy to the entire Tatum family. You have lost a wonderful member of your family; we will miss Billy R. Tatum's presence the next time we see the family.

With love,
Sonny Koya

Goodbye, Coach, and thank you for all that you gave to each of us. Whether it was in the classroom, on the football field, in the boxing ring, or just shootin the breeze out on the quad or around town, you always tried to find a way to engage each and every person you dealt with and always encouraged us to have fun with whatever we were doing. What a guy!

Bill was a good friend and fellow educator. He was an extremely nice and hospitable man. I always enjoyed gathering at his place for an enjoyable time. They don't make 'em like him anymore. May he rest in peace.

Bill was my 8th grade school teacher and when we graduated to high school, he came with us. He was always one of my favorite teachers. When even the class did not want to take a test or do any work in the classroom, all we had to do was have Bill start singing Old Man River.
He will be missed...
