Frederic Collins Obituary

Frederic "Ric" Collins passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family, on October 21, after a short illness. He was 66 years old. Born in 1944 in Oakland, Ric was a lifelong Californian, growing up in Orinda and Hemet, and then attending UC Santa Barbara. At UCSB, he met his wife, Lorraine Seabury Collins. After college, he attended UC San Francisco School of Dentistry. A love of travel led him to his first dental position at the Policlinique Dentaire in Lausanne, Switzerland. He and Lorraine lived and worked in Switzerland for several years, where they made many lifelong friends. Returning to California with their two children, they settled in Santa Rosa. Ric opened his dental practice in Rincon Valley, where he practiced for 35 years, until his retirement in April. He loved being a family dentist and was thankful to be part of such a wonderful community of patients and friends. Ric lived his life to the fullest. He loved traveling and was fortunate to travel to many places in the world with his family and friends. Through his love of travel, he was able to share his home with many exchange students over the years, including students when he was a member of Rotary Club of Santa Rosa West. His friends and family know him as a good friend who was always ready to organize a trip or a get together. Many fun times were had under the guidance of Ric's adventurous spirit. He was an avid gardener and fly-fisherman and loved spending time in his yard and fishing around Burney. He was a voracious reader and passed on his love of reading to his children. A faithful 49er, he took many trips to Candlestick with his son and friends. His favorite place was Lake Tahoe and he spent many happy years there with his family and friends, skiing, fishing and relaxing at the lake. Survived by his college sweetheart and loving wife of 43 years, Lorraine; beloved daughter Nicole and husband Frank Starsinic of Davis, CA; adored son, Matt Collins of San Francisco, CA; precious grandson Dylan and granddaughter Mary, of Davis, CA; loving brother Larry and sister-in-law Nancy of Medford, OR; caring sister and brother-in-law Gail and Dan Didden of Pacific Palisades, CA; and nephews and nieces Brant and Craig Didden, Kelley Collins Groves, Sara Collins and their families. He is preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Roslyn Collins. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends but always remembered for his zest for life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent either to the Volunteer Center of Sonoma County or Santa Rosa Junior College Foundation in memoriam. A celebration of life will be held Sunday, November 7th at 2:00 p.m. at Mark West Lodge, 2520 Mark West Springs Road, Santa Rosa.

Lorraine, I was shocked and deeply saddened when Tere told me of Ric's passing. We lost contact over the years, although it was great to see you and Ric at Ginger's wedding. I can't explain why exactly, but one image that came to mind in reflecting on Ric and times past was from a decades-past picture of Pasha running full tilt toward the camera over the sparkling snow in Switzerland, full of life and dazzling. Ric, too, was full of life and sparkle. I know you will all miss him. As you have suggested, we'll send something in his memory to the Volunteer Center of Sonoma County. Warmest regards and deepest condolences, Joanne and Dave Wilshin

Dear Lorrain, Nicole and Matt,

I really like Ricky’s obituary. You guys are really a wonderful, loving family – you really stuck together. Ricky was a healer, and I guess his death was his ultimate challenge. This world is definitely unfair – nothing makes sense. One thing was for sure; Ricky was a great man and lived a blessed life.

He was my older cousin and his brother Larry is my oldest cousin. Growing up I always looked up to them. Ricky was in dental school and Larry was flying Jets for the Blue Angels, I couldn’t wait to grow up and do those things too.

We would have the best family get-togethers during the holidays. Nana was a gifted southern cook (She won the best cake prize in the State of California 193?). So, we truly were gifted with exceptional food. Both my aunts learned the art of southern cooking from her, so when Nana passed the plate to my aunts, we still had the best of food, and the best of company. A lot of laughter and holiday cheer.

One of my brightest memories with Ricky was at a Christmas Dinner, when I was 10 and he was 21. I was reading 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, by Jules Verne’s. I remember I had only a couple of pages to go before I finished, and down pops Ricky. He was so excited to see me reading that book. He sat there and retold the whole story to me. That was great. And always when I think of Captain Nemo I think of Ricky. Also, during the summers I would stay at Aunt Roslyn’s house, she always put me in Ricky and Larry’s room, it was filled with books. And she told me they read all those books, so I always thought they read a lot.

My dad always thought Ricky and Larry were special, I never understood why, until a couple of years ago, I read dad’s WWII letters. In them, he writes beautifully of Ricky’s birth. He’s writing to Aunt Roslyn from a beachhead in Anzio, Italy in March 1944. It was his most challenging battle in his life or one of them. In the letter he’s thrilled that the baby’s named after him, for I know he thought he wouldn’t be coming home, but he never gave up hope, for out of 120,000 men 60,000 came through it alive, and he endured it for the whole 5 months. So, Ricky was his hope, and so was Larry.

Throughout Ric’s life, he followed his dream of dentistry, he was greatly loved by family and friends. There’s nothing better in life. I’m proud he was my cousin. He lived a great life, and will be sorely missed.

Psalm 62: 8
Trust in him at all times, O people;
pour out your heart before him;
God is a refuge for us.

God Bless you guys,

Love your cousin,
Debbie

Pages might say it more completely, but no words can say it better than "He will be deeply missed by his family and friends but always remembered for his zest for life." He cast a wide wide open net of joy over all he came in contact with. Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you remember and celebrate his life well lived.
Love, Dana and Derek
