Grendel was a lifelong learner and teacher: music, piano, art, foreign languages, improv acting, teaching ESL, but writing was her passion. She was compassionate to all. Born May 18, 1926 in Duarte CA. Died March 20, 2012 in Santa Barbara CA. She went to Berkeley High, graduated UC Berkeley in 1948, degree in Economics. Married Harold Winkler, had three kids: Matt, Michele and Karen. She moved to Monte Rio in 1973, meeting a great group of friends and writers lasting through her moves to Goat Rock, Jenner and Sebastopol. Moved to Santa Cruz in 1998 then to Santa Barbara in 2003. Survived by her son Matt: Austin, TX - his wife Peggy and three sons; daughters Michele-Santa Cruz, her two sons and three grandkids, and Karen, Santa Barbara, her son and three daughters. Services are Saturday, May 26, 2012, 3:00 p.m. Santa Cruz Memorial Park, 1927 Ocean St., Santa Cruz, CA. Reception to follow at Michele's home 831-426-5927
