Kenneth E. Schaffert

Passed away peacefully into his next life on October, 24, 2010, after another hard-fought battle with returning cancer at the age of 64. His family and friends will always remember the strength and determination that he displayed during this fight. He previously had conquered throat cancer more than 20 years ago. He faced this last battle with the same lifetime courage he especially demonstrated during the Vietnam War. A decorated disabled veteran, he had a life-long empathy for all of our country's heroic servicemen in every war, both past and present. In the Army, he rose to the rank of Specialist 4 in Vietnam, and was assigned to the 1st squad, 1st platoon A Company, 2nd Battalion, 35th Brigade of the 25th Infantry Division. Ken was a recipient of the Purple Heart, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Advanced Infantry Training Ribbon. In life, Ken was an avid sportsman, whose love of sports and the outdoors was passed to his children and grandchildren. Ken loved hunting, fishing, baseball, football, basketball, softball as well as other sports. He coached his children's sports teams in Little League and Babe Ruth baseball and supported them in all of their endeavors. In addition, Ken enjoyed spending time with friends and family, especially his beloved grandchildren. He also treasured playing on the same softball team with his son. A lifetime Californian, Ken retired from his career as a grocery clerk with the President's Service Excellence Award. He provided 35 years of outstanding service and earlier in his professional career he also earned his Associate Arts degree. Ken was preceded to the after-life by his mother June, stepmother Gen and most recently his father Bob, a decorated World War II veteran of the Marine Corps. His memory will live on in the hearts of his remaining family and friends, including his loving son Matt; his beloved daughter Rachel and son-in-law Todd, and his adored grandchildren Tristan and Hannah. He is also survived by his brother Don and sister-in-law Suzi; his aunts Ruby and Ruth, as well as numerous family members and friends, including Marilyn, his former spouse. There will be no services at his request. Anyone who desires may make a donation in Ken's name to Disabled American Veterans.
