Sanford Harris Obituary

Passed away in the same manner as he lived his life with peaceful dignity on December 20, 2010 at 86 years of age. A native San Franciscan, born to Jack and Minnie Harris, he was raised in the Richmond District with his older brother Bob surrounded by cousins and with aunts and uncles keeping watchful eyes on all of them. He attended Alamo, Presidio and Washington High growing up with a unique kindness for insects, animals and people. He entered the Navy as a pharmacist mate and ended his career as a Lieutenant. Sandy received his master's degree in Psychology at Cal with added classes at Northwestern. A devoted son, he helped his parents run their liquor store on Fillmore St. in the 1950's. He fell in love with a woman named Cindy who later became his wife of 58 years. He shared a lifetime of adventures with his family: socializing, playing tennis, golf, fishing, bridge and travel. Together they had three children: Cathy Jefferson, Rob and Greg Harris. Cynde Harris, his daughter in law, and five granddaughters: Talia and Brie Jefferson, CJ, Dana and Kelly Harris will miss him dearly. Sandy worked at the Adult Guidance Center, did psychological testing and later became the Director of the Center for Special Problems, a forensic mental health center in San Francisco. He was loved and appreciated for his empathic nature for clients and staff. Family was most important in Cindy and Sandy's life. Their house on Lake St in SF and in Kenwood was the center of much activity with family and friends mostly involving food, games, food, conversation, and food. Celebration of life for friends and family January 2 at 3 p.m. at Varenna at Fountaingrove Parkway. Donations in Sandy's name can be made to Santa Rosa Symphony http://www.santarosasymphony.com/

Dear Cindy and Family, I was hired by Sandy at the Center For Special Problems back in 1983, and was always touched by his sweet and gentle ways. The last time I ran into him ( at the Beach Chalet, where his son was playing in the band), he was full of smiles, and warm hugs. The Earth will miss his presence! Barbara Cook & Ruth Hughes

Sandy Harris will truly be missed. He was my father's Best Friend for over 75 years and a kind & gentle soul. He always shared positive thoughts & offered encouragement to us as kids. Sure, as my sister mentioned, he would get lost on the way to our many shared camping trips and outings, but when he arrived, the presence of the Harris family was always worth the wait - we probably anticipated their arrival even more & were anxious to hear the stories of what road they missed or what experience they had along the way. No matter how much time had passed, each visit was like we just saw each other last week - very comfortable and easy. The Harris' were always great hosts & we have many happy memories of times spent together. We will all miss him and offer our love and condolences to all members of the extended Harris family.
Most Fondly & Sincerely,

Our memories are full of fun times with Sandy and Cindy and family. As a dear friend for over 75 years Sandy was such a special person in our lives. We spent many happy times with the Harris family, traveling, playing golf, tennis, bridge, fishing, etc.

My most sincere condolences to Sandy's family. I worked with Sandy at the Center for Special Problems. I remember him as a kind, bright, warm man filled with grace. I later was to meet his daughter Cathy and am blessed to have her as my dear friend. You are in my thoughts and heart as you grieve for him and celebrate his life. Betsy Cottini

May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived. I have such fond memories of the entire Harris family when you would come visit for the weekend in Santa Clara and when we would visit you in SF. We always had such fun!! Sandy would always get lost on the way, so you'd be forever late, and Sandy would take dad's ribbing in stride. He was always so calming and sincere and he would always talk to us kids as he did with the adults....he really listened to us. As my favorite of my dad's friends, and a wonderful friend to my dad for 70+ years, I will miss Sandy dearly, as I do Greg, but the fond memories will last my lifetime.

I clearly remember going home with my dear friend Cathy one day after high school and meeting Sandy for the first time. Knowing he was a psychologist really scared me, as I was afraid he could read my thoughts about some of our less than honorable activities. He was so incredibly sweet and personable and he looked deep into my eyes and listened intently to everything I said. So, I was SURE he could read my mind. In the four decades since then, I came to realize that he was just an incredibly sweet and personable man who really listened...because he cared about what others were saying. He will be missed.
