HUTCHINSON, Shirley Rose O'Brien Centenarian, Shirley Rose O'Brien Hutchinson died on January 22, 2013. Shirley experienced so much in her lifetime. Growing up on an isolated ranch during the depression, Shirley witnessed multiple advancements and innovations during her one hundred years. She was fortunate to experience many firsts: the development of the airplane, to seeing the first man step on the moon. She could have never imagined the invention of the computer and cellular phone and the impact it would have on communications today. Shirley was born on July 15, 1912 to Montana homesteaders, Michael and Kate (Tresch) O'Brien in Moore, Montana. The youngest of five children, she spent her childhood on the Montana ranch, along with her siblings, Walter (Mick), Agnes, Elsa and Ted. Her sister, Agnes, died at the age of 14, the result of a hay mowing accident. Her childhood was not an easy one, but she never complained. She would say, "you do what you have to do, to survive." Special treats, such as oranges and celery, were highlights of their Christmas celebrations. After graduation from high school, she joined her sister Elsa in Portland, Oregon and worked as a secretary. She was also a princess in the Portland Rose Festival Parade. Shirley eventually made her way to San Francisco, California and worked as a legal secretary for a patent attorney. She met the "love of her life," Martin Hutchinson, M.D., an intern at the University of California School of Medicine. They were married on August 6, 1938 in Reno, Nevada. They settled in Santa Rosa, California. Shirley always said her most valued accomplishment was being married to her husband Martin (Hutch), and raising her four children - Richard M. Hutchinson, M.D., Santa Rosa, Ann Hutchinson Porrino, Santa Rosa, Ruth Hutchinson Van Bemmel, Vacaville and William H. Hutchinson, Santa Rosa. Shirley had many interests throughout her life. She contributed many hours to local civic organizations. The Sonoma county Medical Association alliance (SCMAA) played a major role in her life. She received the Allie Award for being president of the SCMA four times. Many programs, such as the Foster Child Christmas Gift and Medical Scholarship Fund were instituted during her terms. She was an avid Republican and served on the board of Santa Rosa Republican Federated Women and the California Republican Central Committee. She volunteered at various Santa Rosa PTA's, Treasure House, Saturday Afternoon Club, and the Sonoma County Museum, to just name a few. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Martin Hutchinson, M.D. in 1964. She leaves a large family who will miss her dearly. Known as Grandma Hutch and GiGi, she is survived by four children, 10 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren: Richard M. Hutchinson, M.D. and wife Annette, their children Catherine Hutchinson Foster (Andrew), and their children Megan, Caroline, Grace and Claire; Karen Hutchinson Limongelli and husband Victor and their children Jack, Katie, Sophia and Matt; and Michael Richard Hutchison and wife Merissa and their children Kellan and Joey. Ann Hutchinson Porrino and husband Peter and their children Pia Porrino Glenn and husband Anthony and their children Jake, Luke and Elizabeth, Marcus Porrino and wife Rebecca and their children Lucian and Dante and Annjanette Porrino De Luca and husband Niccolo, son Dominic Porrino, Esq. Ruth Hutchinson Van Bemmel and husband David and their children Tyrie Van Bemmel and wife Tracie and their son Nathan, Derek Van Bemmel and wife Shauna and their children Michael Hutchinson (Hutchie) and Skylar.
