Walter John McCarthy, 64, of Asotin, passed away of natural causes November 22, 2012. He was born January 15, 1948, to John Edward McCarthy and Alice Fahrig McCarthy in Oakland, California He graduated from Analy High School in 1966. Walter married Lorraine Farnsworth McCarthy September 30, 2000, in Covelo, California. In the late 1960s he was stationed in San Diego while he was in the U.S. Navy. He was sent to Vietnam as an aircraft recovery specialist. Walter served four years in the Navy and one year in Vietnam. While living in Bodega, California, from the 1970s to the mid 1980s he was captain and owner of the 55' commercial fishing vessel "Lanola" that harvested Albacore Tuna, Dungeness Crab, California King Salmon and Herring. He fished from the Gulf of Alaska to the Gulf of Mexico 200 miles off shore to international waters including Tomales Bay. He lived in Sebastopol, California, from the mid 1980s to 2003. While there he owned and operated a hay and feed company, a fence repair company and a tractor company. He was captain of a 37' commercial fishing vessel "Suzan E" which also harvested California King Salmon, Dungeness Crab and Herring in coastal waters and San Francisco Bay. During this period he was also captain and owner of the fishing vessel "Slippery" which was solely used for harvesting Herring in San Francisco and Tomales Bay. In 2004, he moved to Asotin County and was captain and owner of the 39' commercial fishing vessel "No Limit" from early 2000 to 2011. The vessel was used to harvest Herring in San Francisco Bay. He was also a member of River City Church in Lewiston. Everyone was a friend he hadn't met yet and he will be missed by everyone. Walter is survived by his wife, Lorraine McCarthy; son, Michael Gavin McCarthy and Agnes of Anatone; stepsons, James Saylor, Danny Saylor and Donny Saylor, both of Rohnert Park, California, Noah Nunez and Benjamin Nunez, both of Santa Rosa, California; stepdaughter, Rachel Nunez of Santa Rosa, California; grandson, Jason Cassiday of Asotin; and granddaughter, Julia Cassiday of Asotin. He was preceded in death by his parents, John McCarthy and Alice McCarthy; son, Shawn McCarthy; and aunt, Bertha Fahrig.
