I am in shock as I type this entry as I have just found out about an hour ago about Wyntress's death. She seemed to carry this candle that lit her from within...and its warmth radiated out from her. What an extraordinary woman. When you talked with Wyntress, she really listened to you...how rare and wonderful is that...
Words cannot express my grief..

My sincere condolences to the Smith Family. As your neighbor since the mid-80s, I remember when the newly built community was just beginning to form. I remember meeting Wyntress and her telling me about her husband and their three sons. From that day forward, we were befriended neighbors. I remember her smiling and waving to me, when I outside, as she drove further down the street to her home. I remember the brief chats we would sometime have when crossing paths at the mailbox or elsewhere in the neighborhood. Wyntress was a great neighbor and I will miss her.

My sincere condolences to the Smith family on the death of this dear and wonderful woman. I only worked with Wyntress in the Adult LIteracy Program in Rio Vista for a few months, but I came to like and admire her enormously. She was so warm and friendly and made my students and me feel comfortable in her role as coordinator for the Program. The last time I saw her was at the picnic for the tutors and students and their families in July, and I remember thinking when I gave her a hug before I left how lucky we tutors were to have such a really special person to guide us in this very important work. I just want to let Wyntress's family know that my prayers and thoughts are with them as this very sad time. Kathleen Haugh, Tutor, Rio Vista LIteracy Program

I was so deeply saddened when a co-worker told me of Wyntress' passing. She had just attended my retirement party a few weeks before. I feel so honored to have known her, she has always had such a sweet spirit, and always made time to stop and speak. Everyone who met her will always remember how she could instantly put you at ease. She would bring me a magnet (sometimes purple) from her travels. I am so thankful that she touched my life as she was such a blessing to us all. She will live on in the many great memories we shared throughout the years we worked together at the Library. I extend my prayers and sympathies to her family and many friends.

To Wyntress' husband and her sons, and all other family members - I met Wyntress through the Solano Napa Association for the Education of Young Children. While we didn't know each other well, I definitely consider that my loss. At our last meeting, she gave me her business card so I could email her a copy of an article I'd written, that had been published on-line a couple of months ago.

On the morning of September 25, as I was getting ready to leave my home to attend a conference, I pulled her business card from my purse. It was my intention to send her that email when I returned home.

Before the keynote speaker addressed those at the conference, Dorothy (from the S-NAEYC) read a memorial for Wyntress. A woman who was sitting next to me said, "She didn't die, did she?" My reply was, "No, that couldn't have happened."

Virtually everyone who heard the news of Wyntress' death, was simply stunned. Wyntress gave those around her a sense of quiet peace - she seemed happy and interested in what others were doing; she was encouraging and supportive, even to those of us who hadn't taken the opportunity to get to know her.

She will be deeply missed.

To the family of Wyntress, my heart goes out to you all....I did not know Wyntress, but I did know her sisters, Winifred & Wendy, from working at the Marin County Courts.

Reading some of the comments from your guest book from the people who did know Wyntress made me feel as though I did know her. She truly was pure of heart....I feel I did know her through her sisters, Winifred and Wendy....

God Bless her husband James, and sons James, Wesley and Jesse, and her wonderful family.

I met with Wyntess on several occasions to design lesson plans to assist the parent in communicating with the school. Wyntress had a wonderful giving spirit and she will be deeply missed...my prayers are with the family.

Wyntress bought a painting from me called "Peep Door" back in 2006 at the Art & Soul Festival. I was shocked when I saw her name in the paper today, and I feel very sorry for her family.

Thank you, Wyntress.
Tucky.

I had the good fortune to work with Wyntress for the past 10+ years. She cheered us when we were discouraged, she silently lent a hand when we were overwhelmed, she often shared her wisdom as we planned our work. She has left a big hole in the library's Literacy Office and in her work in the community. She will be missed by so many of us.

Wyntress was such a wonderful person. She took such good care of us at the Family Reunion this past July, and it is hard to believe that she is no longer with us physically, but her sweet spirit will live on forever, and we will never forget her smile and kindness. We will keep the family in prayer and my God continue to comfort the family during this difficult time.

I met Wyntress at least 7 years ago through the Reach Out and Read program. I have always valued her positive and thoughtful comments. Her poster presentation about volunteers and advice have helped so many of us with our programs. I will miss her, yet think of her often as I continue my work in Los Angeles on behalf of children in need of our early literacy intervention program.
