August 19, 1922 - July 30, 2012 Alex Stokes was born in Sultan, Washington at 3:50 a.m. on August 19, 1922 and went to Duvall High School from 1936 - 1940. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1942-1945 as Ships Cook 2nd Class and was "famous" for his chocolate cake recipe. Alex was the proud owner of Sebastopol Steam Laundry from 1956-1974 with his wife Jadelle where he was well liked by his customers and employees because of his fairness and generous spirit. He was a Chartered member of the Sebastopol Optimist Club from 1958-1974. During his Optimist Club years, he served as Club president and Lt. Governor of District 20, Zone 7, as well as co-managed the Optimist Youth Basketball program from 1960-1970. When he retired in 1974, his hobbies were gardening, horse racing, cooking and dancing. Since Alex loved to dance, it was a natural fit for him to serve as the president of the Hill Hoppers Dance Club for one year as well as the Merri Go-Rounders Dance Club for ten years. During his time with the Merri Go-Rounders Club, the "cook" in him came out and he reorganized their refreshment program process which they still use today. Alex will be remembered for his eternal optimism, jovial mannerism and kindheartedness. He is survived by his loving wife, Jadelle Stokes, his daughter Suzanne Glover, son-in-law Scott Glover, his cat "Panda" and his two sons Robert Stokes and Alex Stokes. A viewing will be held on Friday, August 3, 2012 from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. at Pleasant Hills Chapel with the Funeral Service to start immediately following at 11:00 a.m. Arrangements under the direction of Pleasant Hills Memorial Park & Mortuary, 1700 Pleasant Hill Rd., Sebastopol, CA.
