Mary Chickenoff passed away peacefully on December 30, 2012, at the home of her daughter Mary Jane Gurney in Lancaster, CA, at the age of 89. Mary was born in Santa Rosa to William and Anne Slivkoff, both natives of Russia. She grew up in Sebastopol, and upon graduation from High School, worked for the Federal Government in San Francisco. She returned to Santa Rosa after World War II and married George Chickenoff, whom she knew from the Russian Molokan Church where both of their families belonged. George brought in his navy discharge papers and filed them with Mary, who was working at the post office at that time They fell in love, married and raised four daughters in Santa Rosa who adore them to this day. George passed away in 2007. Mary worked in several professions as she raised her children and took care of her large extended families. She retired from Sonoma State University in 1985, after working several years in the Records and Admissions Office. Mary held several interests and hobbies. She was a great gardener and had a special gift with begonias and fuchsias. She enjoyed attending the floral displays at the Sonoma County Fair and also traveled near and far to see a wide variety of gardens. Her home cured pickles are still craved today. She was a gourmet cook and loved to cook for her family and friends. Her gracious and loving spirit and her artistry with all she created made being with Mary a special event. She had a keen wit, intellect and a passion for the Truth. Her love for her family and friends will be remembered and missed. She is survived by her four daughters: Mary Jane Gurney of Lancaster, Ellen Roantree of San Francisco, Paula Lawrence of Alameda, and Carol King of Santa Rosa; sister Emily Revard of Anaheim, brother Bill Slivkoff and his wife Emmy of San Jose and Clara Taylor of Rohnert Park; eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and several nephews and nieces whom she loved dearly. Friends are invited to attend a Funeral Service on Sunday, January 6, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Daniels Chapel of the Roses, 1225 Sonoma Avenue, Santa Rosa. Interment will be private. Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2012 from 12:00 Noon until 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
