Entered into rest December 13, 2013, age 103. A native of Santa Rosa, Mary was born April 24, 1910, the eighth and youngest child of Felice and Maria Bertoli, on the Bertoli family ranch which was located on what is now the main runway of the Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport. Mary spent her childhood playing and working on the ranch picking hops, grapes, and prunes as well as attending school at the Lone Redwood School District. Thereafter, she rode a train from Fulton to Santa Rosa to attend Sweet's Business College. Mary's sister Edith Bertoli Sani and brother-in-law George Sani introduced her to a young Italian immigrant named Fred Vitellini who worked with George at Grace Brothers Brewery. Mary and Fred married on September 17, 1933. In December of that same year, Mary started her career as a medical receptionist and nursing aide, first working with Dr. Leonard Hines and when Dr. Hines had to temporarily leave his practice to serve in World War II as an Army flight surgeon, Mary started working for a young intern named Dr. William Rudee. After Dr. Rudee returned from his stint as a Navy doctor, he asked Mary to work for him and she did so for three decades. At that same time, Mary returned to her agricultural roots, helping Fred with the operation of the family chicken ranch in Bennett Valley. Fred and Mary both retired in 1973 and enjoyed many years together traveling the world taking cruises and enjoying car trips throughout the United States and Canada. But after 63 years of marriage, Fred passed away in 1996. But despite the loss of her husband, Mary remained active, constantly hosting parties for family and friends for many years. Mary was also an avid and talented gardener which she was continued to do until her late 90s. In addition to her husband Fred and her parents, Mary is predeceased by her brothers Samuel Bertoli, Paul Bertoli, James Bertoli, Felix Bertoli, and Settimo Bertoli and her sisters Edith Sani and Adeline Sani. She is also predeceased by nephews Sam Bertoli (Barbara), Lou Bertoli (Diane), Adolph "Bert" Bertoli (Lona) and niece Grace Cambra (Pete). She is survived by nieces and nephews Robert Bertoli, Richard Bertoli, Beverly Bertoli, and Lillian Sani Rosaia. She is also survived by numerous grandnieces and grandnephews, as well as many great-grandnieces and great-grand nephews. She is additionally survived by her dear friends Louis Naranjo and his partner Steve Hockman, sister-in-law Carrie Vitellini, as well as her beloved caregivers Lili King and Meriani Boseiwaqa. Rosary shall be conducted at St. Rose Church in Santa Rosa on Thursday, December 26, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. A memorial mass with be said on Friday, December 27, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Rose with a reception to follow.
