Steve Alfred Mache, a lifelong Sonoma County resident, was born and raised in Cazadero. He was the son of Steve and Dora Mache. He attended Montgomery Elementary, Analy High and was a graduate of Petaluma High. He joined the US Army Air Corps and trained as a B-17 pilot. In 1944 he married Jeanne Virginia Spargo. The Army sent them to Lincoln, Nebraska and Dyersburg, Tennessee. When his enlistment was up they returned to Cazadero to start their family. In addition to helping his parents in the family business, the Cazadero General Store, he served a term as Chief of the Cazadero Fire Department. He worked as a logger running heavy machinery and building many roads around Cazadero until 1966 when he began a new career as owner of Mache's Shell in Santa Rosa. His award winning service station became a popular destination for quality repair and fair prices. Retiring in 1989 he and Jeanne were able to enjoy family and travel. They made many trips across the US and to Alaska. An avid outdoorsman, he hunted and fished. Family camping trips to Modoc County were an eagerly anticipated annual event. His repair and woodworking skills kept him busy and made him popular in his Thomas Drive neighborhood. Debilitated by a lengthy illness he spent his last days in Novato surrounded by family and friends. He passed away on March 10 and finally reunited with Jeanne who had died in 2011. He leaves behind his daughters Pam (Fred) Castillo and Gail (David) Wyss, sons Steven, Bill (Debbie) and Chuck (Cindy), grandchildren Tony, Brian and Nate Castillo, Stephanie and Lauren Wyss, Brittany Mache Serences, Melissa, Byron and Kyle Mache, Shannon, Rachael and Thomas Mache and six great-grandchildren. At his request there will be no service. Donations in his memory may be made to the Cazadero Volunteer Fire Department, 5985 Cazadero Highway, Cazadero CA 95421 or to a .
