Passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on April 4, 2014. Don was born January 23, 1928 in Ada, Minnesota and was the sixth of nine children born to Elias (Eli) and Helen Nepsted-Peterson. He joined the US Navy at seventeen and became part of the US military radiation experiment Crossroads in 1946. He served as a radiation inspector on the USS Ralph Talbert and various other ships. After the service, Don spent a number of years in the Washington area working various jobs. He moved to St. Helena, CA in 1951 where he became a tree faller/truck driver and had three children: Nancy, Dawn Lee-Ann and Donnie Joe. He moved to Santa Rosa in 1960 to work construction. This is when he met Martha Greene who became his life partner. He became the step father, (Uncle Don) to June, John, Mike, Joe and Guy. Then, Don and Martha had three more children, Donald, Diana and Sherri. He had a life-long love of the outdoors, including the ocean where he enjoyed the many family fishing trips on his boat in Bodega Bay. He was thrilled to teach the kids how to drive his tractor that he used for rototilling. He enjoyed raising animals, harvesting large gardens, seafood, a beer or two with his buddies, rolling his own cigarettes, Bingo and the many trips with Martha to the casinos and spending time with the grandkids. Don is survived by his loving partner, Martha Greene, his sons, Donnie Joe and Donald (Becki) and daughters, Nancy (Robert), Dawn Lee-Ann, Diana (Brian) and Sherri (Robert), stepchildren, June, Eddie (Deanna), Mike (Christy), Joe, and Guy, his brother Russell and sisters Hazel, and Betty and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be dearly missed. Celebration of life will begin Sunday, April 13, 2014 at 11 o'clock at Daniel's Chapel of the Roses in Santa Rosa.
