A beautiful, vivacious woman, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Susan passed away in Santa Rosa from cancer. Born and raised in Oshkosh, WI she described her childhood as nostalgic in the midst of extended family and friends. After high school graduation, Susan came west to attend Stanford University, graduating in 1950 with a degree in Fine Arts. It was at Stanford she fell in love with her future husband. While on leave from the US Navy during the Korean War, she and Howard "Wood" Hastings were married. They were blessed with three children; Lisa Anne Hastings, Robert W. Hastings and Douglas R. Hastings. After several years in the Chicago area, the family moved to Southern California. And after becoming a single mother, she and the children moved to Claremont where Susan earned her Teaching Credential. It was there she met Lachlan P. MacDonald and his three children whom she embraced as her own. Her last child Craig C. MacDonald was born to this marriage. Moving to San Luis Obispo, she was a teacher at Ocean View and Shell Beach Elementary Schools until retiring after 20 years of teaching. Susan had a passion for life and her many hobbies: painting, swimming, genealogy, history and geology. She was fortunate to meet Daniel Rodney "Rod" Lee, who shared these interests. Married in 1988, they moved to Oakmont in 1992. They were active in many art groups. Rod passed away in 2001. She remained very active, often with her brother and sisters-in-law. She swam and walked her beloved beagle, Poochie, nearly every day. Susan attended St. Patrick's Episcopal Church in Kenwood. In 2013, she was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Until her death, her children lovingly cared for her. Susan is survived by her brother Craig (Shelly) Thompson; daughter Anne Whitaker, sons Bob (Vicky) Hastings, Doug (Elena) Hastings and Craig (Amy) MacDonald; her seven adored grandchildren; one great granddaughter; six nieces and nephews; stepchildren Lawrence (Hannah) MacDonald, Gordon (Belinda) MacDonald and the late Rod MacDonald; and sisters-in-law Margie, Kay and Nancy with whom she had lots of fun times. Her brothers Bob and Andy preceded her in death. The family wishes to thank Santa Rosa Kaiser Hospital and Memorial Hospice for the excellent care and support Susan received. Friends are invited to attend Susan's Celebration of Life on April 27, 2014 at 2:00 p.m.. at the Berger Center, 6637 Oakmont Drive in Oakmont. In her memory, donations to the Sonoma Humane Society, P.O. Box 1296, Santa Rosa, CA 95402 or Santa Rosa Junior College Art Dept., 1501 Mendocino Ave., Santa Rosa, CA 95401 would be appreciated.
