A mighty tree has fallen in the forest ... taken from us all too soon. A California native born in Merced on September 2, 1945, John Knott passed away peacefully on May 22, 2014, in the presence of his beloved life partner of twenty years, Nancy McGauley. John graduated from Arroyo High School in San Lorenzo, Class of 1963. Voted Most Popular Senior Male, he was on the Varsity Football and Wrestling teams. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served for four years, achieving the rank of Captain on a Nuclear Missile base in Germany, where he married Greta and helped raise her two children, Sean and Sheila. John was a successful Real Estate Broker in Berkeley, raising his family, and sailing his boat in the San Francisco Bay before he moved to Sonoma County. He enjoyed the good life here, living and working in Santa Rosa and Sebastopol, canoeing on the Russian River, and singing four part harmonies with the Redwood Chordsmen. Known affectionately as 'Plan Man', John helped people to successfully secure needed property permits. Bigger than life and always smiling, his unwavering optimism, gentleness, humor and great generosity was felt by everyone he met. He truly was the 'wind beneath our wings'. He will be deeply missed by his brother Michael Knott, Deborah Francis, Nancy McGauley, Steve Taylor, Sean and Sheila Blanc, Terry Murphy, Sanford and David Wallerstein, Janis and Robin, Daniel and Landa, 'The Beamers', and the many friends he loved so much. Now gone to the other side, he will live in our hearts forever. A celebration of John's life will be held at Daniels Chapel of the Roses, 1225 Sonoma Ave., Santa Rosa (707-525-3730) Sunday June 22, 2014 at 2 p.m.
