John was born in San Francisco to Thomas and Deborah Courtney Spillane, the youngest of eight. He attended Mont La Salle H.S. and St. Mary's College. He married the love of his life, Rosemarie Lawder, on June 22, 1957 in Old St. Mary's Cathedral. In 1958 they moved to Sebastopol where they lived for 56 years. They joined St. Sebastian's Church and John taught English at Analy H.S. for 29 years. John loved people and generously gave his time and energy to many groups such as the Young Men's Institute, church choir, St. Vincent de Paul Society, and Autumn Leaves. A natural athlete, he bowled, played tennis, danced, and took his family camping each summer. He remained active throughout his life and was a familiar figure in Sonoma County as he made his rounds running errands and helping any in need. John loved a good joke and entertained us all with Irish songs in his rich baritone voice. We will miss his dramatic recitals of poems and the stories he shared of his large family. John is survived by his wife Rosemarie and children Ariana, Rob (Eva), Courtney, Kathryn, Brendan, and Emma; grandchildren Nick (Nataliya), Erin Reneé, Richard, Gabriel, Kyle, Sam, and Jack; great-grandchildren Ashlyn, Shiloh, and Isabella; his sister Theresa, and 28 nieces and nephews. He is deeply missed by everyone whose life he touched. A Funeral Mass will be said on Saturday, July 19 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Sebastian's Church, 7983 Covert Lane, Sebastopol. A Rosary will be said the evening before on July 18 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Sebastian's Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Thomas Aquinas College, 10000 Ojai Road, Santa Paula, CA 93060. Parent-Sorensen Mortuary-Sebastopol, 829-5433.
