Long time Monte Rio resident, passed away peacefully Oct. 26, 2012. She came to the Russian River area as a child and loved to swim in the river until age 92. Born Jan. 17, 1919 in Oakland, she graduated from Oakland High School in 1937 and Samuel Merritt College in 1940. She married Allan O. Nelson from Berkeley Nov. 2, 1940 whom she had first met at thirteen at a Monte Rio dance. They had two children and travelled the world together as Allan worked for the Foreign Service. Vergie later wrote "Those Far Away Places" about her years abroad. She is survived by her brother Don Ludwig of Clare, England, daughter Cyndie Baures, Ingleside, TX, son Dr. Robin Nelson (Dee), Kenmore, WA, grandson Mark James (Tania), Sebastopol, CA, granddaughter Marina Galvin (Dan), Santa Rosa, CA and great grandchildren Kallista, Orion and Nikolas James, nieces Alison and Gillian Ludwig and nephews Whitney and Dr. Stephen Ludwig and numerous cousins.
