Santa Rosa-Gayle E. Lujan, age 56, passed away at her home in Santa Rosa, in the loving care of her husband and daughter, on Friday, November 30, 2012. She was born in Glendale, CA on July 17, 1956, a daughter of Walter and Laura (Pollard) Winner. She was united in marriage to Dan Lujan on November 14, 1981. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two children, Laura Lujan of Santa Rosa, and Keith Lujan, currently serving as a Marine flight engineer in Afghanistan; a sister, Barbara (Jim) Kaufmann; and a nephew, Jeff Winner. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Glenn Winner. Gayle worked as a labor and delivery nurse for 28 years, most recently at Sutter Medical Center, Santa Rosa, formerly known as Community Hospital. While continuing to work, Gayle homeschooled her children and was active in the homeschooling community, as well as Sonoma County 4H. An accomplished cook, Gayle was especially fond of supporting local growers through their co-ops and farmer's markets. She was an avid hiker and runner and ran several half marathons in her early 50's. Gayle was also an equestrian for a number of years and then turned to ocean kayaking. She was particularly fond of her annual mother/daughter trip. During her college years, Gayle was a pilot and flew across the country with her college flying club. Her fondness for flying influenced her son to pursue a career in aviation. Memorial services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 15, 2012 at Daniels Chapel of the Roses, 1225 Sonoma Ave., Santa Rosa with the Rev. Mike Hayes officiating. The family will greet friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service. Interment at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale will take place at a later date. Special thanks to Sutter VNA Hospice, and the 4th floor nurses at Sutter Medical Center, Santa Rosa. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Gayle's name to the USO.
