Passed away at his Santa Rosa residence on January 22, 2013 at the age of 90 years. Devoted and cherished husband of the late Barbara "June" Smith for over 64 years. Loving father of Keith Smith and the late Dennis Smith and grandfather of Daniel Smith all of Santa Rosa. Dear father-in-law of Shirley Smith of Rohnert Park. Survived by scores of nieces, nephews, cousins other family and friends. A native of Cleveland, Tennessee, Smitty, enlisted in the U.S. Army within a week of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He served with the 985 Ordinance Depot Company, landing at Normandy, in Northern France. Driving heavy trucks and tanks, he served throughout central Europe, going all the way to Berlin. It was during his training, stationed in San Francisco that he met his lifelong partner and wife, Barbara June Thompson of Ava, Missouri at a USO "dime-a-dance". Smitty proposed to June on the dance floor. They were married after the war on June's 21st birthday and remained together for almost 64 years. They settled in the south Bay area starting the Bayside Building Materials, Inc. In 1995 they moved to Santa Rosa to enjoy retirement. Services will be held at Parent - Sorensen Mortuary in Petaluma, 850 Keokuk St, Petaluma CA 94952. 707-763-4131. Visitation is on Tuesday, January 29 from 3:00-7:00 p.m., and funeral services on Wednesday, January 30 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be on the next day, Thursday, January 31 at 11:30 a.m. at Alta Mesa Memorial Park, 695 Arastradero Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306.
