Sylvia Brigden passed away at her Santa Rosa home Tuesday after an eight month battle with cancer. Sylvia was born in Los Angeles and went to school in North Hollywood, graduating from North Hollywood High in 1956. After attending UCLA for two years, she transferred to Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo where she graduated with a degree in Home Economics in 1961. She returned the following year to get her degree in secondary education. In 1962, she married her husband, Wayne, and they lived in Los Osos in San Luis Obispo County for the next nine months while her husband completed his education. In 1963, the young married couple moved to the Pasadena area where Sylvia did substitute teaching. In 1965, the couple moved to the Antelope Valley in the high desert when Wayne took a job at Edwards Air Force Base. Sylvia got a teaching job at Paraclete High School in Lancaster, a new Catholic high school. At Paraclete, Sylvia set up the Home Economics Department, writing the curriculum, and buying all the new equipment, stoves, refrigerators, washing machines etc. The couple moved to Sonoma County in 1970. At that time, Sylvia got involved with Weight Watchers and was a role model for the organization. She worked several years as a Weight Watcher lecturer. In 1990, Sylvia went back to school to learn bookkeeping so she could work with her husband in their new business, XZEL. She continued working in the business until they sold the company in 2002. Sylvia was an active member of the St. Eugene Parish. She was a decorative artist, turning out many beautiful painted pieces, and a member of the Wine Country Decorative Artists. For many years she was active with the American Association of University Women. More recently, she enjoyed time with her Bible study group. Sylvia loved animals and particularly her two kitties, Callie and Precious. In the fall of 2012, Sylvia and her husband celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Her laugh and enthusiastic disposition will be missed by many.
