Shirley HUNTINGTON Obituary

Shirley Hull Huntington, beloved by two sons and four grandchildren died suddenly at Santa Rosa, California on April 24, 2014. Shirley was born in Brooklyn, NY on November 20, 1918 to Kenneth Duryee Hull, and Dorothy Luckenbach Hull. She spent her early life at Mill Neck, Long Island, with her parents and brother, Kenneth D. Hull, Jr. Shirley worked as a nurse's aide during World War II, and married George L. de Peyster of New York, a naval officer who served in the Pacific. After the war, they moved to San Francisco with their two sons, and later to Santa Barbara. Divorced in 1955, Shirley lived near Palm Springs, and later in Los Angeles. In 1965 she married Howard E. Huntington. They resided in Pasadena and Santa Barbara until his death in 1980. An artist, Shirley enjoyed painting, gardening and cooking. She remained in the Santa Barbara area until she moved to assisted living in Santa Rosa in 2009. Shirley is survived by her sons, George de Peyster of Santa Rosa and F.V. "Cort" de Peyster of Reno; their wives, and four adult grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, Shirley's family requests that donations in her memory be given to the Santa Barbara Humane Society, and the Santa Barbara Botanical Garden. Shirley was a very sweet person. I made a huge ring for her once. It was one of the largest natural fresh water pearls in the world, from the Mississippi River. She loved it. The matching pearl pin was designed by my father for Loretta Young. I spent many happy times visiting with Shirley.

My wife and I knew Shirley many years ago when she and Howard spent a lot of time at Eldorado country Club in Indian Wells. She was a sweet and kind person who found beauty wherever she looked. Her sons meant a great deal to her, and to them and their families Helenka and I offer our sincere condolences.
