KOHR, FRANCES E. 89 -passed away on December 22, 2012 at her home in Atlantic City with her daughter Pamela Bryan by her side. Frances was born and grew up in Wyomissing, Pa. She attended and graduated from the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf in 1943. She enjoyed sports and was captain of the PSD girls' basketball team. It was there she met her future husband Spurgeon Kohr, who also played for the boys' team. They were married on April 6, 1946 in Wyomissing, PA. Shortly thereafter they moved to Atlantic City and were lifelong residents of Venice Park. They remained happily married for over 56 years until Spurgeon's passing in 2002. She was a founding member of the Ephrata Guild for the Deaf, active in the South Jersey area as a social and cultural club for the deaf. Frances never viewed her deafness as a handicap but rather as the center of a valuable cultural resource which enriched her life through the many friends found throughout the deaf community. She looked forward to attending the monthly club gatherings at the Margate Community Center. She and Spurgeon enjoyed the company of their life-long friend Marie Enwright with many card, board games and especially laughter lasting throughout the day. Many events were held at their home where friends were always welcome. When her father, an avid outdoorsman, came to visit, Frances relished the prospect of a fishing or crabbing trip. Prior to her retirement, Frances was employed in the family business and worked with her husband managing stores on the Atlantic City Boardwalk and Steel Pier. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother. Surviving are children; Danny Kohr of Marmora, and Pamela Bryan of Atlantic City .
