John Gerard McKenzie M.D., F.C.F.P. Dr. Jack November 7, 1917 January 11, 2013 Dr. Jack passed away peacefully at UHNBC on January 11, 2013. Jack was born in Prince George in 1917 and spent most of his life here. He is predeceased by his parents John and Marian McKenzie and his siblings Helen, Mary, Joseph and Bernard. He will be sadly missed by his beloved wife and partner of 66 years, Andrea; his children: Andrea (George), Frances (Ray), Gerard (Susan), Kathleen (Allen), Douglas (Maris), and Kevin (Shannon); 17 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Jack graduated from Baron Byng High School in Prince George. He then attended UBC in Applied Science (Engineering) and Vancouver Normal School. He briefly taught school in Fort Graham, Takla Landing, McLeod Lake, and Central Fort George School in Prince George. In 1940, he enrolled at the University of Manitoba Medical College and received his M.D. Degree in 1945. During his internship at St. Boniface hospital, he met his wife, Andrea de La Barriere. They were married in 1946. Following a short stint in Michel-Natal (Sparwood, BC) he returned to PG to practice medicine until 1986. He was semi-retired in 1987 and preformed locums for other physicians and special assignments for the College of Physicians and Surgeons until 1992. Always active in his profession, Jack spearheaded the building of the Associate Medical Clinic and the Phoenix Medical Centre. He served as Medical Director of Prince George Regional Hospital for four years and represented this area to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC, acting as president of the College for one term. He was also very active as a member of Sacred Heart Cathedral. Jack worked tirelessly for the Prince George Hospital Foundation, Friends of Children and the Elder Citizens Recreation Association. Jack was the recipient of numerous honours: Queen Elizabeth ll Medals honouring both the 25th and 50th anniversaries of her coronation; Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Medal from his Holiness Pope John Paul ll; Honorary Fellowship in Family Medicine from the College of Family Physicians of Canada; and Volunteer Award of Merit for the City of Prince George. One of his greatest honours was the naming of the Dr. John G. McKenzie Family Practice Clinic in Prince George in 1996. The family wishes to express its sincere gratitude to the staffs of the Internal Medicine Unit, Rehabilitation Unit, and Simon Fraser Lodge as well as to Drs. Redenbach, Attia, and Frye for caring for Jack with compassion and dignity. Special thanks as well goes to Tom Letchford, his "guardian angel" while in Rehab. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Dr. Jack McKenzie Endowment Fund (#887) at the Spirit of the North Foundation, or to a charity of your choice. A Celebration of Life for Dr. Jack will be held at Sacred Heart Cathedral on Friday, January 18, 2013 at 1:30 pm. Prayer service Thursday January 17, 2013 at 7:00 pm, Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
