From the condolences below I realize that Dr. Wonders died some years ago in February 2011. Sadly, I did not k now he had passed on. He was a great influence in my life and I remember him as a kind, generous, and caring person
I was one of the students who had the good fortune to know Dr.Wonders. He was the supervisor of my Masters thesis and it was he who encouraged me to undertake my field work on Reindeer Nomadism in Finnmark, Norway (April 1952).
I'm forever grateful that I had the good fortune to know him.

We are sorry for your loss.
Your father was our house guest on Sept 5/57 at Fort Providence, NWT. We still have our Guest Book with his signiture. Jim was I/C RCMP and I was the Nurse there.
Jim had a first edition of "Artic Land Expedition" by Capt. George Back that he left at Fort Reliance, NWT, that has since dissappeared. We were pleased to find a copy of the New Edition of Capt. Back's book where your father wrote the Introduction.

David & I heard about Bill's death through Jean Coutts of the "Cortona Gang". As you may remember, I was in his first-year physical geography class in 1959/60 and still remember his fascinating lectures. And of course David & I remember with fondness our Cortona trip together in 2005. Our sympathy to you, Lillian, and your family.

We note with sadness the passing of Dr. Wonders. He was Bill to his staff and the many students, whose life he touched. It was a pleasure to work within the harmonious and growing Department of Geography at the U of Alberta under his leadership and in his presence. His was the voice of courage, reason and vision still long after his retirement. We both feel privileged that Bill was part of our lives.

In my eyes and in my heart, Bill was a bright, bold and brave man. Curious and intellectual. Generous of spirit. Kind and funny. Well-loved by all who really knew him. Alway asking and wanting you to do your best and be a better person. And thanks to him, I am. I was lucky to know him.
Loving thoughts go to Lillian and all his dear family.

I knew Bill during the 1980s when the federal government appointed him as fact-finder for examining boundary options between the Dene and Inuit land claims. I worked for the Dene Nation at that time. Bill will be remembered as a dedicated geographer and Canadian and it was an honour to work with him. Please accept my condolences.
