Dorothy Smith Obituary

Deaconess Dorothy B. Smith, of Petersburg, was called to glory to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 17, 2014, at the Vibra Hospital, Richmond. Dot, as she was affectionately called, was born Nov. 3, 1935, to the late Wilburt and Martha Brown.

She was a 1956 graduate of Sussex County Training School, Waverly, and furthered her education at North Carolina A & T College, Greensboro, N.C.

Dorothy accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at the Piney Grove A.M.E Zion Church, Waverly. She was also a former member of the Bethany Baptist Church and later became faithful member of Morning Star Baptist Church, Petersburg, where she served as a member of the deaconess board, usher ministry, and the pastor's aide. She was an advisor to so many people and a supporter of the Mickens family reunion, Blandford neighborhood watch, and Petersburg Triad.

She was employed by Allied Chemical (Honeywell ) for over 30 plus years.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Ernest Brown, Meade Brown, and Clarence Brown.

Dorothy leaves to cherish in her memories: a loving and devoted husband of 53 years, James "Buttercup" Smith; son, James "Bubba" Rawlings (Debbie); stepson, James Michael Pegram (Nita); two sisters, Gearlean B. Keaton (James) of Hampton, and Muzelle B. Musgrove (Silas) of Chesterfield; three brothers, John Brown and James Brown (Deanna), both of Baltimore, Md., and William Brown (Dorothy) of Petersburg; a grandson, James O. Rawlings II; a great-grandson, Jayden Wells; one aunt, Bernice Holmes of Waverly; devoted nieces, Gwen Harris(Donald), Monica and Yvonne Harris of Petersburg; sisters-in-law, one devoted, Barbara A. Davis, Charlotte Smith, Yvonne Harris, all of Petersburg, Agnes Cunningham of Prince George, Ruth Greene of Philadelphia, and Alice Brown of Wakefield; brothers-in-law, William Smith of Hopewell, Sidney Smith Jr., (Phyllis) of Crewe, and Ronald Smith of Petersburg; devoted neighbor, Oscar Hansley; and a host of nieces; nephews; cousins; godchildren; and special friends.

A celebration of life for Deaconess Dorothy B. Smith will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, June 23, 2014, at Morning Star Baptist Church, 1660 Dupuy Road, Petersburg, the Rev. Lewis Newbill, Pastor, officiating. The interment will be at the Dinwiddie Memorial Park. The family will also receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, June 22, 2014, at the chapel of William N. Bland & Son Funeral Home.

The family will assemble at 12 p.m. at 836 Cameron St., Petersburg, on the day of the service. All honorary and active pallbearers, and friends are asked to assemble at 12:15 p.m. at the church. The remains will rest one hour prior to the service.

Professional services have been entrusted to the staff of William N. Bland and Son Funeral Home, 137 Harrison St., Petersburg, 804-732-7841.
