James G. Perkins, 81, of Dunwoody, Ga., died Jan. 18, 2013.
Mr. Perkins was born in Petersburg, Va., and was the son of the late James Gilbert Perkins Sr. and Margaret Hanes Perkins. He graduated from Petersburg High School in 1948 and then from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1952, where he was a life-long supporter and a member of the Presidential Scholarship Committee. Jim was commissioned in the U.S. Naval Reserve onboard the USS Adirondack from 1952-1955. His long career as a district manager with BellSouth spanned 1956-1987. Jim was also a former director for the Georgia Jaycees, a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, and a member of Dunwoody United Methodist Church. Jim was active in the Republican Party for over 30 years, commencing in the 1960s and extending through the 1990s, during which time he served as: the 1988 George Bush state campaign Rural County coordinator for 75 counties; a Republican member of the DeKalb Board of Elections & Voter Registration; DeKalb GOP Vice Chair 1989-1991; member of the Bush/Quayle State Steering Committee, 1992; and state delegate to the 1992 Republican National Convention. The highlight of his political work was being honored and personally recognized by President Reagan as the Georgia Republican Party's 1989-1990 Volunteer of the Year. A lifelong history buff, Jim was often referred to as the unofficial historian of Dunwoody, and wrote the popular "Past Tense" column in the Dunwoody Crier. He was passionate about historic preservation and was instrumental in saving and preserving Dunwoody's Creek-Spruill Farmhouse. Jim also personally researched and tracked the path of the historic Hightower Indian Trail through Dunwoody, publishing maps to distribute to schools and raising money for The Dunwoody Preservation Trust.
Jim is survived by his wife, Judy; daughters, Virginia Day, Rebecca Perkins, Kathleen Herne (Jeff), and Sherry Broadway (Jim); and eight grandchildren.

Jim Perkins was truly one-of-a-kind and I mean that in a very positive and respectful way. He was my Boss at Southern Bell/Bellsouth in the mid-80's and we developed a very solid & lasting friendship. Both of us were very conservative politically but he was a staunch Tech fan & I was - and still am - a staunch Dawg fan. At a retirement function in Macon he had Buzz - the GT mascot - attend and harass me (all in good fun). So we agreed on many things and certainly differed on some others. But we remained very good friends to this day. My condolences & prayers to his family and many friends. He will be missed by all.

Judy: Jimmy was a man of many talents. Our memories of him are full of his quick 1 liner humor and his easy way of solving a problem. One of my first memories is that of my fourth birthday (he was 5 at the time) and we shared a whole pint of ice cream. May your memories be so sweet and full of good times as that. May God be with you and give you peace with the knowledge that He will always be by your side.
