Mr. Albert A. Dawson Jr., age 66, of 356 Osage Road, Petersburg, Va., departed this life on Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012, at his home. He was the first child of the late Albert A. Dawson Sr. and Naomi Dawson.
Albert attended Petersburg Public Schools and graduated from Peabody High School in 1964.
Upon graduation, he attended Tougaloo College for two years and then served his country proudly in the U.S Air Force. After serving his country, he returned home and attended Virginia Union University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education in 1974. Three years later he received a master's degree in education administration and supervision from Virginia State University. In 1978, he completed courses in guidance and counseling at VSU.
Albert taught in the Petersburg Public School System for over 20 years. He was very politically active for several years. In 1987, Albert was elected as the Clerk of the Circuit Court for the City of Petersburg, Va. He was first African-American to hold this position in the state of Virginia. He retired in 2002 from the school system due to health issues.
He accepted the Lord at an early age and was baptized at the First Baptist Church, Harrison Street, Petersburg.
In his later years he met his fiancé Willa Robinson, who is a loving, devoted and caring woman. He was affectionately called "Butch" by family, "Shot" by friends and "Daddy" by his children. Butch was known as the family historian. Butch loved traveling to Staunton, Va., to the Dawson/Crawford family reunions to inform the elders and children whose shoulder they stood on. Albert was a community leader and a true mentor to many people. He had a deep devotion for instilling being positive and uplifting to every life he touched, teached and reached.
Albert is pre-deceased by his wife, Paulette Mayfield Dawson; father, Albert Dawson Sr.; mother, Naomi Wright Dawson.
He is survived by: his children, Albert A. Dawson III of Richmond, Va., Duane Dawson of Lyman, S.C., Mark Dawson of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Danielle Dawson of Pulaski, Va.; his fiancé, Willa Robinson; a sister, Yeta Phillips (Robert); grandson, Dequan Jones; niece, Ebonee Markham-Browser (Clifton); and nephew, Jonathan Markham; uncle, Leo Wright (Ann); brothers-in-law, James Mayfield and Jacque Mayfield; stepdaughters, Kristen and Keisha Robinson; many cousins, neighbors and friends.
A funeral service will be held at noon Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at the First Baptist Church, Harrison Street, Petersburg. Dr. Jeremiah Tillman, pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow in the Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 on Friday evening, Dec. 7, 2012, at the chapel of William N. Bland & Son Funeral Home, Petersburg. Family is asked to assemble at the residence at 10:45 a.m. on the day of the service.
