Charles Evans Sr.

On Wednesday, March 26, 2014, Deacon Charles "Chuck" Evans, Sr., 73, of Prince George, passed away peacefully at the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center, Richmond.

Born April 27, 1940, in Disputanta, to the late William Henry Evans Sr. and Julia Marie Allen–Evans. He was preceded in death by: sisters, Mable Hunt, Glorious Carter, and Joyce Nelson–Bey; two brothers, Clarence Pernell Evans and William Henry Evans Jr.

He leaves to cherish his memories: his loving wife, Sharon M. Evans; one son, Charles Jr., "Chuckie"; two daughters, Rhonda and Renata; three grandsons, Quenton, DeJhun and Kavari. Also, to his extended family and whom he considered his daughter and very close to his heart, Audrey Holmes-Fisher and her family, David Sr., David Jr., and Alisha and devoted nephew/friend, Wayne Gholston.

He is survived by: a sister, Myrtle Moody of Spring Grove; two brothers, Henry Evans of Varina, and John Lee Evans of Hopewell. He is also survived by: his stepmother, Pearl Jones Evans of Spring Grove; and a host of devoted niece;s and nephews.

He joined the Lebanon Baptist Church and was an active member since he was 10 years old. He has served as the church treasurer, trustee, and chairman of the deacon board. He was a faithful member of the Sunlight Elk's Lodge #1558 since 1976, where he served at the exalted ruler for 30 years.

He attended the Disputanta Training School. In 1957, he graduated from J.E.J. Moore High School where he served as the class president. In 1960, he received his master's degree in barbering from Virginia State College, now Virginia State University. In 1963, he joined the United States Air Force where he served as a maintenance operator for four years. In 1967, he was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant. In 2000, he retired from Central State Hospital after 33 years as a barber supervisor.

He was not ready to stay at home, so he started a new career in private security as a security officer. He received the rank of major in just two years. He was also employed at Anthem Health Incorporated as a security officer in Richmond. He was employed for the city of Petersburg (PAT) for 7 ½ years.

Services for Deacon Charles E. Evans Sr. will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 31, 2014, at Good Shepherd Baptist Church, 2223 S. Crater Road, Petersburg, the Rev. Jeffrey L. Reaves Sr., pastor, and the Rev. James Barnes, pastor of Lebanon Baptist Church, Disputanta, eulogist. The interment to follow at Lebanon Baptist Church Cemetery.
