Donald Payton Rigney, 87, of Hopewell, went to be with his Lord on Friday, Aug. 2, 2013.

Born in Pulaski, Va., he was the son of the late Kelly and Annie Lindsey Rigney. Mr. Rigney was a United States Marine Corps veteran and a retired millwright with Allied Chemical. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday school and was a member of the church choir. He was also a member of Loyal Order of the Moose No. 1472. Mr. Rigney was a devoted and loving husband, father, Paw-Paw and great-Paw-Paw. In addition to his parents, Mr. Rigney was preceded in death by three brothers, Wallace Rigney Sr., Jerry Rigney and James Rigney, and a sister, Rebecca Duncan.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Steele Rigney; daughters, Donna Rigney Butterworth and husband, Curtis, of Hopewell, and Debra Rigney Drouin and husband, Francis, of New Hampshire; grandchildren, Brandon Payton Butterworth and wife, Jessica, of Hopewell, Brooke Ashley Butterworth of Wilmington, N.C., and Melissa Lee Drouin of New Hampshire; great-grandchildren, Carter Reynoldson Butterworth and Grayson Davis Butterworth; sister, Joyce Rigney Whitt of Radford, Va.; brothers, Hersel Rigney and wife, Margarete, of Michigan, and Robert "Bobby" Rigney of Pulaski, Va.; and two devoted caregivers, Terry Mitchell and Jessi Elkins.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service. Interment will follow at Bermuda Memorial Park.
