Mr. Earnest Windel Phillips, 57, of 1451 Barley Road, Valentine, peacefully transitioned to everlasting rest early Monday morning, May 13, 2013, Medical College of Virginia, Richmond.
He was born March 3, 1956, to the late Rufus and Geraldine Phillips. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by: a brother, James; and two nephews, James and Ervin.
At an early age, he confessed Christ as his personal savior, and became a member of the Rocky Mount Baptist Church, McKenney. He was employed with Phillingane Construction for numerous years, until his health declined.
Earnest had the heart the size of Texas and his presence will be truly missed by all who knew him.
Left to cherish his memories are: four daughters, whom he loved dearly, Mahala Carter Moore (Terrence) of Dinwiddie, Latrina Green (Randell) and Latonya Ampy, both of Petersburg, and Shameta Dashay (Danté) of Ettrick (his bond with his girls, especially Latrina, was unbreakable); a devoted fiancée who he was planning to marry soon, Anna Minter; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two godchildren, Janette Crowder and Tawanda Jones; six brothers, Leon Phillips, Larry Phillips (Pearla), Gerald Phillips (Irene), Gene Phillips, Ervin Phillips, and Willie Jones (Edith); five sisters, Brenda Prosise, Alma Crowder (Clyde), Mary Phillips, Ethel Crowder, and Sheila Mallory; four aunts, Betty Street of Petersburg, Rosa Hall of Dinwiddie, Alice Crowder of Stony Creek, and Mary Prosise of Petersburg; and a host of nieces nephews; cousins; friends, to include two devoted, Joe Melvin Spencer, and George Reed; caring neighbors; and co-workers too numerous to name.
A funeral service for Mr. Earnest W. Phillips will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 17, 2013, at Rocky Mount Baptist Church, 24901 Ridge Road, McKenney, the Rev. Carlos Jordan, pastor, eulogist. The interment will follow at the church cemetery.
