Mr. Elijah Junius Robinson, "Bubba", 72, of Dinwiddie County, Va., entered into eternal rest on Saturday, July 12, 2014, at his residence, while under hospice care.
He was born Dec. 27, 1941, to the late Thomas Edward and Anna Robinson of Stony Creek, Va. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, India Lee Jones Robinson; two sisters, Thelma Robinson and Helen Robinson; and two brothers, Thomas Robinson and James Robinson.
Elijah was baptized at an early age and joined the Rocky Mount Baptist Church. He was a faithful and dedicated member, serving as a trustee, member of the Men's Ministry, and he also graced the walls of the church as an usher for many years, until his health declined.
Elijah attended Southside High School, Dinwiddie, Va. He began his work experience as a farmer, after which he began working for Brown and Williamson in Petersburg, Va., where he retired. Lastly, he worked for the Virginia Department of Transportation, from which he retired as well. Elijah was a former member of the C.V. Wilson Masonic Lodge, No. 317, Prince Hall Affiliation, where he served many years, and was a past master.
He had a love and passion for the sport of baseball. He played for the Masontown Tigers, and managed the Masontown Expos for a period of time.
Elijah is survived by one loving and caring son and his wife, both very dedicated, Dean I. Robinson (Gail); two granddaughters, Karon Nivens (Lamar) and Unishea Robinson; two great-grandsons, Kaiden Nivens and John Grant III; a niece, who he considered a daughter, Jean Rives; and a great-nephew who he loved as his grandson, William Rives Jr.; four loving and caring siblings, two sisters, Lola Jones (Melvin) and Carrie Robinson (Ollie); two brothers, Larry Robinson and Bruce Robinson; three sisters-in-law, Shirley Jones, Diane Flowers (Stith), and Patricia Jones Robinson; one brother-in-law, Melvin Jones Jr.; a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, church members, and friends who loved him dearly.
He had two dedicated caregivers, Dorothy Mabry and Deborah Anne Walker.
Elijah was affectionately known as "Papa" by many who frequented his home during their youth, to include Marica Moore (Shondric), DeBryant Mabry (RaShee), Shakalah Myler, DeAjah Mabry, and Armani Myler.
There were also his longtime neighbors who he leaves to cherish his memories.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 17, 2014, at 1 p.m. at the Rocky Mount Baptist Church, McKenney, with the pastor, the Rev. Carlos Jordan, officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Public viewing will be on Wednesday, July 16, 2014, at the McKenney chapel.
