Mrs. Elois Scott Archer departed this life Saturday, April 19, 2014, at 7:35 p.m. Elois was born Jan. 28, 1930, in Norfolk, Va., to Charles A. and Hattie Roberts Scott of Amelia County, Va.
Her early childhood and elementary education was acquired in Norfolk, Va. She later graduated from Mary Potter Academy in Oxford, N.C. Her higher education was obtained at Virginia State University and Iowa State University, where she acquired B.S. and M.S. degrees respectively after having begun graduate studies at Colorado State University. She joined the AKA sorority while a student at Virginia State University.
On Nov. 23, 1952, Elois married a soldier, named Beverly Byrd Archer, of Amelia, Va., at Baltimore. To that union three children were born: John, Beverly and Alan.
She served as a teacher of home economics in Sollers Point, Md., for a period of two years prior to her graduate studies. She also served as a home economics teacher at the Laboratory School of Florida A&M University. She accompanied her husband to Nigeria, West Africa, to support his work with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Upon her return, she worked in the Registrar's Office and later with the Agriculture Research Program at Florida A&M. She also trained para-professional Cooperative Extension workers in Franklin County while living in Columbus, Ohio.
In the later years of her life, she returned to Virginia to support her aging mother and manage family farm operations while her husband pursued a faculty appointment at Virginia State University. During the recent past, Elois maintained family ties; contributed to charitable causes and participated in social events at a declining rate until she was overcome by congestive heart failure Saturday, April 19.
She is survived by her husband, B. Byrd Archer; sons, John S. Archer (Antoinette), Alan K. Archer (Helene); grandchildren, Deborah and Charles Archer; and a host of relatives and friends, to include JaCari Redwine.
Services for Mrs. Elois Scott Archer will be held 11 a.m. Friday, April 25, 2014, at the Chapel of J.M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment, Inc., 102 South Avenue, Petersburg, Va. Interment to follow at Virginia Veterans Cemetery.
