God in His infinite wisdom called home Ms. Emily Mae Johnson, age 78, Friday, May 17, 2013, with family surrounding her at home. Born in Mecklenburg County, Va., on Oct. 19, 1934, Emily was preceded in death by her mother, Alma Harper; brother, Franklin Harper Jr.; and a great-granddaughter, Kaliyah Harper.

At an early age, she joined Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, DeWitt, Va., where she served faithfully on the Usher Board until her health declined. Ms. Johnson retired from Dinwiddie County Public School System, where she worked as a cafeteria cook.

She was a devoted member of the Golden Girls Club and The Keelers Mill Road Neighborhood Watch. She loved to travel and shop with her family. Emily will be missed by many for she was well known throughout the community.

She leaves to cherish dear memories, four children, Gladys Harper, Herman Harper, Kathy Harper-Colyer (Thomas) and Richard Dale Harper (Vickie), all of DeWitt, Va.; seven grandchildren, Anthony "Tot" Harper of DeWitt, Va., Makita Monique Byrd (Tracy) of North Dinwiddie, Va., Andre Harper of DeWitt, Va., Nadine Harper of Germany, Katherine "Katie," Rachel and Logan Harper, all of DeWitt, Va.; five great-grandchildren, Sheri and Arthur Byrd of North Dinwiddie, Va., Cameron Harper of Richmond, Va., Dominic and Harold Harper of DeWitt, Va.; three sisters, Frances Prather of DeWitt, Va. (devoted caregiver and companion), Gertrude Jennings (Ernest) of Dinwiddie, Va., and Lou Ellen Harper of Bowling Green, Va.; two devoted brothers, Wallace Lambert (Ida) and Charles Harper (Jackie), both of South Chesterfield, Va.; two aunts, Rosa Richardson of DeWitt, Va. (devoted phone buddy), and Mattie Rogers of Ashbury, N.J.; numerous nieces, among them devoted Jennifer Harper of North Dinwiddie, Va.; numerous nephews, among them three devoted assistant caregivers, George Coleman and James Lambert Jr. both of DeWitt, Va., and Darius King of North Dinwiddie, Va.; several cousins, among them two devoted, Robert and Victoria Lambert, both of DeWitt, Va.; a devoted adopted great-grandchild, Yasmine Terriquez of Richmond, Va.; and a host of other relatives and friends, among them devoted, Gertrude Morgan, Queen Lacy, Allie Henderson, Rachel Hamilton, Thelma Gholson, Thelma Hobbs and Angela Walker.

A special thanks to Ms. Johnson's devoted medical team: Dr. Southall, Dr. Machida, Dr. Epen, the Crater Community Hospice, HealthSouth, Dinwiddie Rehabilitation Center, Dinwiddie Rescue Squad and the Nursing Staff of Southside Regional Medical Center.

A funeral service for Ms. Emily Mae Johnson will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, 2013, at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, 16609 Glebe Road, Dewitt, Va.; the Rev. Gerald Brandon, pastor, and Bishop Van T. Jones, eulogist. The interment will follow at the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at the funeral establishment.
