Mrs. Irene L. Bailey, age 72, of 467 Reservoir Heights, Petersburg, Va., died Thursday, June 19, 2014, at Johnston Willis Medical Center. She was born and raised in Petersburg, Va. Irene was the eldest child of the late Lawrence and Hattie Lacy. She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Mattie Matthews, and her sister, Frances M. Dickerson.

Mrs. Bailey accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church. She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church before joining Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Mrs. Bailey served on Downtown Churches United, where she assisted in feeding those who were in need. She served on the Tabernacle Baptist Church Usher Board as president for over 12 years, attending conventions throughout the state. Mrs. Bailey was an active volunteer at Curtis Elementary School in Chester, Va. Mrs. Bailey was a homemaker and seamstress who loved taking care of her dear family. She loved to travel, play family games, work jig-saw puzzles and carefully tended to her lawn and especially her flower gardens.

Mrs. Bailey graduated from Peabody High School, Class of 1960. She was very active with the class serving as co-chair with her husband, Raymond, serving as president. She assisted and enjoyed the planning of the class functions and activities.

She leaves to cherish her memory her high school sweetheart and devoted husband of 53 years, Raymond L. Bailey; two beautiful, devoted daughters and sons-in-law, Erica B. Taylor and Theodore H. Taylor Jr., and Rhonda L. Bailey-Clarke and Craig S. Clarke. She also leaves the wonders of her life, five loving grandsons, Timothy Isaiah, Aaron Joshua, Noah Alexander Clarke and Theodore H. "Trey" and Gabriel M. Taylor; two sisters, Virginia Moody (Charlie) and Marion Clarke (Melvin); two loving cousins, Louise Riley and Lavera Coleman; two brothers-in-law, Osborne Bailey and T.L. Bailey (Carmencita); one sister-in-law, Loretta C. Bradshaw; and numerous nieces, nephew, cousins, classmates, neighbors and friends.

Services for Mrs. Irene Lacy Bailey will be held 3 p.m. Friday, June 27, 2014, at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 418 Halifax St., Petersburg, Va.; the Rev. Dr. Robert A. Diggs Sr., pastor, eulogist. Interment to follow at Dinwiddie Memorial Park.
