On Friday, July 4, 2014, Mr. James A. Kates, 83, known by many as Snooky and Jim, formerly of 2342-E Hill St., Petersburg, Va., passed away at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg, Va. He was born Dec. 13, 1930, to the late Helen Viola Kates.

He graduated from Peabody High School in 1948. He later continued his studies at Virginia Union University. He worked at the United States Post Office for many years as a mail carrier. He later became the owner of a corner store and a cleaning business. His last job before retiring was the owner of Kates' Bookkeeping & Tax Preparation Services. He was a dedicated and baptized Jehovah's Witness for 49 years, serving as an elder and a regular pioneer, for the Halifax Petersburg Congregation and also serving some months in Waverly, Va.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley P. Kates; mother, Helen V. Kates; aunt, Ruth Kates; uncle, Arthur P. Kates; cousins, Mary Lou Kates, Evelyn Kates, Tulia Brown and Randell Brown; father-in-law, William Pritchett Sr.; mother-in-law, Mary Ruth Pritchett; sister-in-law, Marion Harrison; and brother-in-law, Irving Pritchett.

He leaves to cherish his memory, two devoted daughters, Karen M. Butler and Vanessa K. Olajuwon; two devoted grandsons, Trevor T. Kates (Yvonne) and Kuhreem A. Kates (caregiver); one devoted granddaughter, Ashley S. Clark; three great-grandchildren, Janiyah Dugger, Jazmin Mueller and Richard Muller; one aunt, Nellie Reid of Philadelphia; several nieces and nephews, among them Natalie Mosely Camel (Johnnie) of Salinas, Calif., Eric Harrison (Denise) of Chester, Wayne Harrison (Tracy) and Paul Pritchett, both of Petersburg, Va.; numerous cousins, among them Pamela Brown, Charles Kates (Rosemary) and Michael Kates, all of Petersburg, Va., and Dorcas Brown of Colonial Heights, Va.; two brothers-in-law, Jerome Harrison of Petersburg, Va., and William Pritchett, Jr. (Ann) of Brooklyn, N.Y.; five sisters-in-law, Dorothy Gee, Edith Higgins and Valerie Pritchett, all of Petersburg, Va., Patricia Cooke (Bill) and Jackie White of Richmond, Va.; a host of friends, among them Roy Wynn, Thomas Todd (Helen), Sharon Walton (Otis), Donald Bailey (Sandra), Doris Roberts, Lorraine Cambridge (Vasco), Carol Haskins (Cynthia), Francina Morris, James Harper (Autherette) and one he considered his adoptive daughter, Evelyn Hilton (Eugene), and one he considered as a son, Gene K. Smith, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services for Mr. James A. Kates will be held noon Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness, 575 Old Wagner Road, Petersburg, Va. Interment to follow at Blandford Cemetery.

Wake services will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at the funeral establishment.
