Jean B. Murphy

Today we honor the life and celebrate the homegoing of Mrs. Jean B. Murphy, who departed this life on Monday, June 2, 2014, at the Lucy Corr Village in Chesterfield.

Jean was born on March 13, 1930. She was the oldest of four children, born to the late Paul and Ethel Foote. Jean was a praying woman who loved God, her family, friends and her church. Jean lived life to the fullest. She graduated in 1983 from John Tyler Community College, earning an associate degree in early childhood education.

She was a faithful member of Mount Olivet Baptist Church for 67 years. Jean participated in numerous ministries to include: the Sunday school, missionary, senior ushers, the Ben-Gay Steppers, Girl Scout troop leader, transportation, 6 a.m. prayer and intercessory prayer, and the senior and Mass choirs.

She was very active within the community serving in the following capacity: Petersburg City Bureau of Police Citizen Awareness; Petersburg Community Corrections Resource Board; Central Virginia Health Planning Agency; Inc.; and the Voter Registration and Polls.

Jean also served over 25 years as a 4-H adult leader and president of the Neighborhood Watch. She enjoyed attending the Riverside Pace programs daily, and she loved everyone who came to know her.

Preceding Jean in death was: her husband, Thomas O. Murphy; sisters, Maude Belfield and Sadie Jones; and a brother, David Foote.

She leaves to cherish loving memories to: her daughter, Juanita Harley (James) of Texas; two grandchildren, Jamita and Shamaar both of Texas; one devoted sister, Nancy Foote-Cox (Morris) of Washington, DC; three nieces, Lisa Foote of Washington, DC (dearly loved), Joy Robinson of Baltimore, Md., and Kathy Mims of Oklahoma; three godchildren, Bonnie and Arthur Grant and Roland DeAndre Baugh; foster daughter, Claudette Fields; best friend, Barbara Davis; two wonderful and devoted caregivers, Ava Young and Elaine Gorns; and a host of other relatives; and friends.

Services for Mrs. Jean B. Murphy will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, 800 Augusta Ave., Petersburg, the Rev. Dr. Wesley K. McLaughlin, pastor, eulogist. Interment to follow at Dinwiddie Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral services at the church.
