Mr. Jerry Mays, 62, of 927 Upper Appomattox St., Petersburg, departed this life on Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, at the Medical College of Virginia, Richmond.

He was born on April 22, 1950, to Bertha Stewart Mayes and the late Eddie Mays. Jerry attended the Petersburg Public Schools.

He worked several jobs. His most recent job was as Maintenance technician for G.E. Matthews before his health declined.

In addition to his father, Jerry was preceded in death by a sister, Edna Wiggins; brothers, James, Eugene, Curtis and Elwood Mays; and a grandson, Azyan Patterson.

Left to cherish his precious memory are: his devoted and loving wife of 11 years, Carolyn Mays; sons, Travis and Troy Hill; daughters, Patricia Wiggins, Towanda Stith, LoWanda Stith and Tara Hill (Steve); brothers, Robert Thomas Mayes of Chicago, Ill., Edward Kelly Mayes, Kenneth and Nelson Mayes, all of Petersburg; sisters, Thelma Elaine Mays, Minnie Cole (Larry), Linda Henderson and Brenda Rives, all of Petersburg; aunt, Thelma Stewart of Columbus, Ohio; uncles, John and Paul Stewart, both of Cleveland, Ohio; brothers-in-law, Robert Hill (Roberta), Russell Hill (Audrey), Langston, Stanley and Dan Hill; sisters-in-law, Mary Hill, Dorothy Pulley and Jeanette Hill; 16 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 12 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013, at the Chapel of William N. Bland & Son, Petersburg. Elder Helen Roach of the Harvest International Baptist Church, will officiate. Interment will follow in the Wilkerson Memorial Cemetery, Petersburg. The family is asked to assemble at the residence at 11 a.m. on the day of the service.
